e46fanatics is a better forum than the m3forum imo...but that's from an OT perspective. i go OT at the fanatics and get a lot of tech info at the m3 forum.

...and the M3 is a faster car PERIOD. again, i love the 350Z and think its a beautiful car (and a fantastic car for the money)...but let's not be delusional here, step on the far right pedal and the e46 M3 will blow away a 350Z any day. 333HP and BMW ///M engineering is nothing to fool with.

i'm NOT a "BMW snob," i'm just being realistic.

Im sure noone feels that you are a snob here because you stated a fact. My cousin has an E46 and it is simply hands down faster. More money spent means more refinement, better technology, and more luxurious. On a road course anything can happen with a good driver, but as said, step on the gas and say bye bye to the stock Z. A few key mods could close this gap, but not without FI will you overtake them in a straight line. Lets not go generalizing all forum members now. There are pleanty out there that are great guys. Just think of how so many people disrespect the SRT-4. Lower price class, and so many tear it apart for interior quality, or exterior styling. Its a great car for the money, as is the 350z for alittle more money, as is the E46 for a bit more money.

I have much respect for any e46 with an "M" designation. All the others are soccer mom rides!

Having owned both -- I agree that the M3 if faster ... in a straight line. Which is all a lot of you kids care about anyway. My point is ... the Z has weight advantages which translates to braking and handling advantages ... which translates to me getting around a track with similar (if not faster) lap times (depending on the track).

Take my Z (which is stock except for Stoptechs, and big Kuhmos) and I am confident I would out lap you at any technical road course. The cars are similar enought that the better, more experience driver will post the better lap. Now put Hans Stuck in the M3 -- and I will get @ss kicked.

Ask Hans to drive both cars around the same track -- I am sure the M3 will post the better time, but the Z will be quite close.

i agree that the Z and the M "can" post similar lap times as a lot has to do with the driver...and a good driver in a Z and a poor driver in the M will equate to an M3 loss. equal drivers and the M3 wins.

personally, i don't really care as i am a car ENTHUSIAST and not here to say the M3 is better. and i am not a kid unless you consider a 31 yo professional a "kid."

Well ... one thing to think about ... in Grand-Am Cup series the Z and the M3 both compete. The series has various limitations on mods and for the most part the cars are not far from stock.

Yet the Z is alot more comptetitive in the series. Nissan took 2nd in manufacturer standing in GS (behind Porsche), while BMW placed 5th (behind Ford and Cadillac).

I agree ... both are great cars. Having owned both ... I am confident that (setting aside all the luxury doo-dads and leather interior) the M3 and Z are very similarly performing cars.

Sorry about the kid comment -- not directed toward you. But most e46Fanatics guys (and most guys here) seem to think straight line speed is the end all performance measure. If that were so -- you might be duped into thinking that a Lotus Elise was slow ... but it destroy both the Z and the M3 at the track.

I don't think anyone would contend that the Z is faster in a straight line, or that the Z has a nicer interior...the M3's superiority in these areas is as evident as its rear seats. However there's an interesting road and track article you should check out (most of you have probably seen it).

I think it had a very fair comparison of the two vehicles. IMO these are 2 great cars.

Very interesting read -- thanks for posting. Confirms what I saw and felt at Big Willow -- the M3 and the Z were very much on par. If the Z had a bit more top end power (i.e., plenum, headers, exhaust and TS reflash) -- the Z would walk away from the M3 and would get down into the 1:30's at the track for sure.

I noticed my speed at the end of the front straight at Willow was about low 130's in the M3 and low 120's in the Z. But my cornering speeds through turns 2, 8 and 9 were all 5-8 mph higher in the Z.

Period? No if's, and's, or but's eh?

Maybe Stock for Stock, (Aftermarket perspective here, if you dont care dont read.)

I just finished the paper work yesterday trading in a 2002 BMW Mcoupe w/ 25,000 miles on a 05 Z, over a 05 BMW M3. Reason why I chose the Z is because it is capable of being faster. You cannot really get a M3 above 440 horsepower, unless you want to start shelling out $30,000 +.

As for BMW Engineering, after 80,000 miles, once a part fails on a BMW that usually means you need to start replacing quite a few more parts. Even my Mcoupe at 18,000 miles had to get a whole bunch of stuff replaced which was very expensive, thankfully I have a warranty .

Ive driven Mcoupe's/M3's for 5 years almost. Our family has owned atleast 5 or 6 back to back. They are, hands down, one of the best cars I have ever driven (The M's that is...). But, they are spensive and honestly their aftermarket is ****. Atleast if you want to compete with the big guys, 500hp +.

Besides, within a month my Z will be faster and more agile then my Mcoupe. I believe it weighs 3200 as well...with aftermarket suspension and some NA mods I will have my 315 hp back. Then after APS twin turbo kit, good bye any BMW's I see on the road.

They are both badass cars imo, I honestly like them both the same. I view the M3 as a pretuned car. However I view the Z as a tuner car. That also may be because I do not make enough to support the $30,000+ it takes to fix the engine if I blow it but lol. That and I do not know the E46 S54/S52 motors as well as I should after all these years unfortunatly. But I was always afraid to work on these engines alone...Unlike Japanese engines.

I view everything in terms of mods and stuff so, my .02 on the issue. It also looks like I am beating a dead horse, but I typed all this up so it goes on...lol.

wow, what exactly did i say that would lead you to make that statement?

i think i clearly stated that the M would likely win but i also gave a lot of respect (as an enthusiast) to the 350Z.

i think you need to read my posts again!!!

I've never EVER once seen or come across a BMW driver that was'nt a total A-HOLE..they have it in their puny brains that since they "made it" financially they're in an entirely different social heirarchy and therefore better than everyone else.

Just last night I was at a stop light and making a normal left hand turn, the idiot in the brand new BMW behind me was about less than a foot from my rear bumper, I was'nt in any mood to "mess" around so I just went straight into the right lane and let him zoom past me at like 50 (in a 35) *claps* you're so much better than me huh? little dicks...

try to separate the "BMW owners" from the "BMW driver enthusiasts" as i think there is a difference. i love a lot of cars (including the 350Z) and drool over the ferrari 550/575 maranello!!! i am a car enthusiast and when i had a 325ci and a 350Z blew past me i was psyched as i loved the sound and its power. just cause i have an M3 doesn't mean i think i am "better" than others...i just love cars and i really love the M3 for a lot of reasons.

i'm still trying to figure out why some here see me as a "kid" with the comments i've made...i dunno.
