Default hard downshifting tiptronic

when I have my auto in "tip" mode it seems that when it auto downshifts into 1st as I come to a stop, the shift seems a bit hard at times.

You feel a definate jerk as it drops into 1st. Not all the time but often. Not a big deal to me.... just seems like maybe it'd be nice if it was smoother.

any other auto drivers feel it?

Yes, I have felt it a couple of times. I may be off base but it seems to do it when I am in 2nd gear. If I'm in 3rd gear it's barely noticeable. The car has so much torque, 3rd is an all purpose gear in town and if you need to accelerate before it defaults to 1st gear, 3rd will let you make a smooth getaway without any drama, no lugging at all. Just push the pedal a 1/4 and off you go if you are just cruising. I really like this auto, its completely different than any other AT I've driven, its very impressive And, you can shift into 5th gear in manual mode, you don't have to go back to the full auto mode, just leave it in manual all day if you like.

your not supposed to put the car in 1st, in an auto trip or no trip. UNLESS your at a complete stop!!!! u can put it in second but dont goto first. and if anyone else says different then they dont know what there talkin about. i promise you in time you will ruin your tranny.

Michael.... do you have an auto 350Z?? it seems as though you don't. The 350Z auto in tiptronic mode downshifts by itself. It's not fully "Manual" as soon as your speed slows the tranny gets downshifted.

When youre at about 3 mph it shifts into 1st. by itself. thats where I feel the jerk.

I which I could keep it from doing it, but it's automatic..... I doubt it will ruin the tranny.... if it does then Nissan gets to fix it.

ok guys... I''ll say it again....

there is no option of when the tranny goes into 1st gear. it does it BY ITSELF.

did you get that? BY ITSELF.

I can't control when it decides to go into 1st.

So, does it do it by itself?

Even when you have a manual, you are not suppose to shift to 1st gear while moving. In most manual cars, 1st gear does not have a synchro.

My Audi S4 Tiptronic did that too. Whenever you came to a stop and you were already in 2nd, when it shifted *by itself* into 1st it was a little clunky. All other owners and Audi felt this was not a problem. Unless it becomes really bad I'd wait before running to the dealer.

I dont have a auto Z. but i drove a rental audi a4 my friend got when his car was in the shop. i must say what an awsome car. im thinking of not getting my Z and getting a a4 3.0 but thats another story. any my first supra turbo was a auto with a manual mode. but it didnt have a + - to shift u did it manually 1 2 3 drive.I must say it was slower in manual mode . but i did rag on the audi a bit . but i dont remember it downshifting by itself. u had to push the shifter up or down to shift. but i can tell u this i blew my tranny in my supra and z28. from doing break torks all the time and from doing stupid ****. i striped ever tooth on my read end that the car wouldnt drive. i towed it to the dealer and they took it apart. and a half hour later they gave me every tooth on my read axle and laughed. thank god it was under warrenty. anyways KEEP SHIFTING IT INTO FIRST or do what ever ur doing . and you will be the second to get a new tranny. since raceboy beat you to it. LOL but at leaaast you can say you blew your auto stick.

well it's nothing serious enough to warrant going to the dealer for... just a very minor thing.

all in all I dig the auto!

I don't think its a flaw. Its just a characteristic of the AT. I would not, however, downshift to 2nd until you are under 15mph and Never down shift to 1st. Since the AT defaults to 1st when you stop, there is no reason to downshift because if you do (I tried), you will get a big clunk which you do not want to repeat. It can't be good for the trans to shock the driveline like that, so don't do it. Read my previous post about using 3rd gear if you are cruising and you can go around a corner easily, without lugging in that gear. A lot of people use the transmission to slow down; unless you are racing its not a good idea. Your transmission, manual or automatic, will wear out faster if you do and replacing brakes are a lot cheaper.

Also, it is incorrect to say, "you can't downshift into 1st gear with an MT because 1st gear is unsynchronized". I haven't seen or heard of any MT car without 1st gear synchros since the 60s. My friend's 65 MGB had an unsynchronized 1st gear, my 65 TR4'S 1st gear was synchronized and you could downshift under 15mph into 1st if you were careful. The same has been true on all MTs I've owned since.

The Z's AT is not designed to accept a manual shift into 1st, apparently, and I'm not going to force it. I advise you to do the same.
