The 4 cent solution works great.

Mine opens first time every time ( and I have the optional aero wing).

The springs just unscrew to come off the hatch.

Then open the casing using a screw driver, remove the spring on each one and add two cents to each one and put it all back together.

Awesome fix!!!!!

I had the dealer replace my struts over a year ago when this happened.. fixed it for about 8-10 months.. then the problem returned. The 4 penny trick is working like a champ right now tho!

I took mine to the dealer last week, they ordered the new springs and a week later they arrived. It took me longer talking to the parts guy then the actual replacement. No charge as the car still is under warranty TSB or not.

Just had my springs done yesterday, they look longer than the original ones. And finally, "no problems" with the Z!

I wondered whether they were going to use longer or stiffer springs. Guess now we know. Incidentally, it'll be interesting in the next 7-10 years whether the strike point of these springs starts fatiguing and giving away under the constant pressure of the spring (or is there a frame member directly against the body in this location?)

there is also a weight embedded under the hatch. I have removed it to make it lighter. You have to remove the plastic to reach it and unscrew it away.

I got the tsb fix...it didn't fix it.

Thinking about removing the weight i hear is located in the hatch.

Some have put pennies in the spring mechanism to increase pressure on the spring that opens the hatch.

There are two different rear hatch springs depending on whether or not you have the optional rear aero spoiler. Cars with the spoiler get a stiffer spring to offset the additional weight of the spoiler. The TSB says to replace the spring with the optional stiffer spring regardless of whether or not the car has the spoiler. So the TSB should fix a car without the spoiler, but it may not fix a car with the spoiler, since it already has the stiffer spring.

I've got this problem, and I have the spoiler, so I haven't bothered trying to do the TSB. I think I will try the $0.04 solution, though.

I have the spoiler. I had removed the weight already when the problem started.

I did the 0.04 solution and it worked.

Well I went out this morning and the trunk didn't open after the 4 penny upgrade. I already removed the weight and my car has the factory spoiler. It was about 45 degrees so it was not very cold. I added an extra penny to each side. Hope it works. If not I'll have to take it to the dealer for new springs.

yeah.. penny solution was better for me.. but still not full proof. Now that its very cold here (20-30 deg) its working about 50-75% of the time.. but not all the time.

I'm still waiting for the parts to come in. But my dealer didn't give me any problems when I brought it in to have them look at it. Only when it's super cold do I need to press the button twice. And even though they couldn't replicate the issue, they ordered the parts and are going to fix it for me.
