Default Poll: RICE

should rice be ****'d out? i think we should get rid of it, because for how many decent threads we have on this forum the majority of them become a fight about the usage of the word rice

please right your description of what you think rice means
also please note If What you want to say or feel like you should say has already been said, DONT REPEAT IT

we dont need this thread to be 15 pages long because its just a waste of your and my time and we should have better things to do than talk about a word that doesnt need to exist

Ummm, what's the big deal? Rice is used to make fun of Hondas, and is a grain product that asians predominantly eat. I find no racist meaning behind it and I am Korean. So I will continue to make fun of Hondas and eat it.

rice does exist, but body kits are up to the person, altezzas? sure if you like them, its your car. but a giant NISMO sticker on a civic, or a GTR badge on a Z? thats "rice". GIgantic wings are rice if the person has a front wheel drive and he thinks it makes him faster. but if he likes the way it looks, good for him. just as long as they dont claim things they didnt actually get.

I dont insinuate rice to be derogatory, Its just a word that has taken a meaning in the car world.

yes it IS senseless. That's what drew me to post a reply.

It's NOT racial...it's descriptive. Plus, according to someone up the thread chain, it looks like "Rice is not in the eye of the beholder" (so to speak), but apparently Rice depends upon the original intent of the Rice-ee..or is that Rice-er. I got my post in before this expands to 15 pages.

This is exactly why the word should not be used. Because it has nothing to do with the real definition of rice. It has to do with the association Asians have with rice, " is a grain product that asians predominantly eat" . The word “rice” is used in a derogatory manner. So ladies and gentlemen put two and two together.

“Rice” is very similar to other words that have been banned because of their racial connotation and derogatory use. I’m not going to list any here, but you get the idea. If your Asian and don’t get it, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

But in the end, this will be a mute point and people will still use "rice" in a derogatory way and claim that it has no racial connotation. Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

thought this may shed some light on the subject.... According to Webster's we're using the word properly.

rice Pronunciation Key (rs)
n.
A cereal grass (Oryza sativa) that is cultivated extensively in warm climates for its edible grain.
The starchy grain of this plant, used as a staple food throughout the world. Sometimes used as a slang adjective when decribing automobiles that have accessories that are reminiscent of and appear to have come straight from Japan or the nearest Auto Zone.

[Middle English, from Old French ris, from Old Italian riso, from Latin oryza, from Greek oruza, of Indo-Iranian origin.]

-------------------------------

racial?? nope.... I like brown rice, white rice, Mexican fried rice, as well as French rice and Indian rice.

Grammar Corner: "mute point"mute point ...it's "MOOT" point.

But in any case, isn't rice used when referring to primarily Japanese cars? How racist are we??? We're all buying/lusting after a Japanse car. So that makes me a racist? Am I missing something? Geez Louise.

It is banned. Cracker is a derogatory word .
Definition:Offensive.
Used as a disparaging term for a poor white person of the rural, especially southeast United States.
Used as a disparaging term for a white person.

It's the equivalent to the other word(opposite color) that is banned.

Good point.

20 years ago I rode a Suzuki motorcycle and my friend had a Harley. He would joke that it was a "rice burner" because it was from Japan. Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda (before they were even making cars!) were all grouped into this category. The word originated because of origin of the vehicle, not WHO drove or owned it, and I still think of it in that way.

Edit: Damn, don't you hate it when you are writing something and you stop to do something else and then you finish your post and then you read that someone else (WP Gaston in this case) posted your point 10 minutes ago! Damn I hate that...

But it also wasn't used in an offensive way. Now "rice" is used to describe something to the extent of being "grotesque, nasty, in bad taste, cheap". See the difference. My bike is called a rice rocket all the time. No offense taken because for the same reasons you mentioned. If the word "rice" was used to describe origin then we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The reason I am so adamant about the word is because here in Cali the word has taken a new form, "ricer". This word is aimed directly to insult the individual, which is very unacceptable. It's only a matter of time before people start adding the "r", if they haven't already.
