Default New Mustang - not that cool

I was legitimately excited about the 05 Mustang. Given all the hype around it I really thought that this Mustang might actually be different. I was even considering looking past the solid rear axle.

Well, I saw one at the dealer the other day, and it's the same old rustang - cheap car with a big engine. The inerior looks like crap, and even the exterior lacks something. It just wasn't exciting for some reason. It's an improvement over the 04, but no way I would consider trading my Z in on one. It's unfortunate, because I really wanted to like this car. Oh well, guess I'll wait until the next generation.

Saleen looks slick =P . 300HP for $25,000, this car is already light years ahead of the old one.

I like the retro interior and overall its pretty good, though lost something from the concept, compared to the one it replaces I think its much better. Has'nt the mustang always been about cheap car/big engine? I'd have to drive it to see..I just paid off my 99 though and Im done with mustangs. There will be billions of these on the road soon enough

That's the other thing that burns me about this car. Couldn't Ford do better than 300 HP out of a V8? The Mach I had 320 I think, you would think Ford could at least meet that. Also the V6 actually went down in power. The 04 V6 had 233, the new one has 200. Since they skimped on the transmission and interior, they could put some effort into the engine.

Maybe I'm being overly critical though, at least it's priced right (although the local dealers are marking it up 2-3 K).

I have to see it in person, but right now it looks to long and too "old". Crappy engineers at ford cant design new stuff so they bring back the old, which at that time was amazing.

Just sat in one yesterday at the Tampa auto show, and having owned a 96 Cobra for 4+ years, I can tell you the interior design is a large step above the previous gen. Better materials/fit/finish and the color keyed seats and dash design are great.

Build quality? The car seemed solid enough, but don't all new cars? Only time will really tell. Less plastic in the engine compartment - liked that. How could it not be better though when the previous chassis has been around since before some of these board members had there first Hot Wheel?

The exterior design has been dialed back, but still looks fully resolved and better in person than in the pics. The Z, by the way, has to be the closest-to-concept production car ever made(one of the many reasons I own one)!

Ergonomics still seemed a bit forgetten when compared to the imports. The shifter and e-brake seemed awkward to reach with the seat position.

Regardless, $25K is an amazing price for what you get. The only way for Ford to justify that low of a price is b/c they know they will be producing so many. My "special" Cobra was also making 300hp from the factory and stickered for $26,700 almost a decade ago. Even the Z went for $27 back in 1989.

HP/$ will always be=advantage Mustang. They have volume on there side.

The car isnt bad for the price. I doubt anyone would argue that it is.
The car is light years ahead of what it used to be. I agree with that.
When you are at the bottom there is only one way to go. Up!
Ford couldnt have made it any worse. So you could assume they could only make it better.
I owned a 95 gt forever. Ive loved ford mustang for even longer.
That being said they will never get me in another mustang until they redesign the car from scratch and stop using the retro looks.
The saleen is a great looking car. The fact that it cost nearly 40k for a non supercharged model = insane.
i guess thats why its said they are power in the hands of a few.
To be honest the 350z is far ahead of the new mustang. They dont even come close.

My first car was a '83 Mustang - total piece of junk. Guttless 4 cylnder engine, and the car totally self destructed once it hit $65,000 miles. My '93 Nissan pick-up is still going strong at 130,000 miles and all its had has been a few tune ups, new tires, shocks and brakes. I don't think I'll ever buy a Ford again.

they are getting 300 hp out of a sohc vs 260 hp from the 2004 gt. the mach I put out 305 hp from a dohc.

Also the V6 actually went down in power. The 04 V6 had 233, the new one has 200.

like doc91671 said, the 2004 v6 had 193 hp. the 2005 has 210 hp. granted the z makes more hp than the v6 mustang, but the v6 mustang can be bought for about 19k.

anyways, i havent seen the new mustang in person yet, but given its huge aftermarket support, you can basically change anything you dont like about it for really cheap.

i am sorry, but you cannot own an 88 hp 4 cylinder car and base the mustang on that. i agree that was a crappy unreliable engine that should have never found its way under the hood of the mustang.

the only thing those cars were good for was being used as cheap donor cars for 351 ci engine swaps.

They lost a lot from the concept which accentuated the headlights more and made the car look a lot better from the doors back....

But, it's money vs. quality/style and you'll soon see lots of these on the road trying to race you....

Your right, I should've done my research before I post. I don't know where I got that 233 number. However, I still think a mere 300 hp out of a V8 isn't very impressive in today's HP wars.

You're also right about the after market support, but reading the reviews, the Mustang has a huge nose-dive problem under hard braking, that might be kind of tough to correct with out some serious suspension fixes.
