Default 2003 SCCA stock classification changes / updates

SAC recommendations to leave the MINI Cooper in HS and the BMW 330Ci in DS. The SEB also approved the SAC recommendation of reclassification of the MINI Cooper S from DS to GS, effective 1/1/2003. After considering member input and
SAC recommendations, the SEB has selected the following actions regarding class SS, AS, and BS, and is recommending them to the BOD, effective 1/1/2003:

1. Leave in SS: Mazda RX-7 Turbo ('93+)
2. Move from SS to AS: BMW M Coupe and Roadster ('01+), BMW M3 (E46), and Mercedes SLK32 AMG, and Porsche Boxster S
3. Move from AS to BS: BMW M Coupe and Roadster ('96-'00)

These changes are recommended in conjunction with the new classification of the Nissan 350Z in BS, as shown in the Tech Bulletins elsewhere herein.

SS - Dodge Viper SRT-10
BS - Nissan 350Z
DS - MazdaSpeed Protégé
DS - Chrysler Neon SRT-4
GS - Audi V8 Quattro (change existing GS listing to "Audi V8 Quattro, A8")
2) Stock: The Mazda Miata Club Sport is considered an option package and is covered by the existing Mazda Miata listing in CS.
3) Stock: The VW GTI 337 edition is considered an option package and is covered by the existing VW GTI listing in GS.
4) Stock: The FS listing "Audi 200 V8" is erroneous and is being removed.
5) Stock: The MINI Cooper S is reclassified from DS to GS, effective 1/1/2003.

^ bump ^

Seeing that I've seen many threads out there asking what class the 350Z falls under, I think more people would be interested....

Yah, but you beat me to the road course! I heard VIR was a blast (from about 10 people). The guy who bought my R actually had it there doing it up right.

There are a couple of things not quite right there...

It is easier to say what you can do in a stock class:

*Any air filter with no mod to the stock air box
*Any cat-back exhaust (stock cats must stay)
*Any DOT approved tire
*Any wheel of the exact diameter, width but offset within +/- 0.25 inch
*Any shock that attaches to the stock mounting points
*Any safety equipment (extinguisher, roll bar, harness)
*Any front swaybar
*Any brake pads
*Any fluids (brake, tranny oil, diff oil) but only pump gasoline
*Any accessory that would be classified as comfort and convienence such as radios, mirrors, lights (but no shift lights unless stock on the vehicle...lucky Z owners have one), etc so long as the item does not effect performance (ie, aftermarket pedals are illegal).

You cannot:

*Have an aftermarket intake
*Use metal or braided brake lines unless your car was made before 1992
*Change the steering wheel

Hope that helps...

Unfortunately, the E36M3 is no longer really competitive in BS. The S2k and Boxster dominate right now. This next season, I think the '03 Boxster will be the one that will be the most competition for the Z or the S2k. The '03 Boxster adds 11 peak hp at a lower rpm.

A real dark horse that I think has the potential to dominate BS starting next year is the '96-'00 BMW M Coupe. There was a nationally competitive driver who fielded a 2.8 liter Z3 Coupe a couple of years back and did very well against the same group of cars that is currently in BS. The M Coupe has 47 more hp and 30 more lb/ft of torque than the old 2.8 Z3 Coupes.

Actually, to add to that the shocks cannot be more than a *double* adjustable.

Out of curiosity, who makes a shock that is adjustable for more than jounce and rebound?

Moton and JRZ, to name a few. I think the higher-end Koni's can be made triple-adjustable, not sure about the regular yellows.

I seem to recall that the M-coupe that showed up at nationals in '00 was on triple adjustable JRZ's.

Anyone want to speculate as to how much these Motons and JRZs are going to cost?

Kingmotorsports sells Motons for various Honda/Acuras. The DA's are around $1000 per corner! Link here: http://kingmotorsports.com/products/moton/

JRZ's are similarly priced, IIRC. I know of someone who had single-adjustable JRZ's on his S2000 and I think they weren't all that expensive, maybe somewhere in the $2000 range?

A cheaper alternative would be to get a regular Koni yellow revalved. Koni NA in Kentucky charges ~$100 per shock (doesn't include the little stuff like parts, oil, etc). ProParts (aka Tripoint) in SoCal is a little more expensive, about $125 the last time I checked. Not sure about Truechoice, but I suspect their pricing is similar.

I'm trying to remember the pricing for DA Koni yellows. Maybe $1000-1200 for all 4? BTW, that doesn't include the shock itself, which you have to provide.

Yeah, Truechoice does custom valving on Konis... for my rebuild / revalve of my Koni yellows I was quoted at ~$550.

I know dwnshift on here will be marketing Motons soon for the 350Z...

I bought all four Koni DAs for my E36M3 for $2500 from TC Kline. They were a must have for autox on that car.
