Default Adding a sub to a stock 03 stereo

I've got an 03 Track that has a stock deck with Blaupunkt replacements speakers. Ick. Plus, no sub. However, I have that handy compartment behind the drivers seat where the Boss system adds the sub.

Anyone know what size sub fits there? I've been poking around Crutchfield's site, but it doesn't seem to be too accurate.

Also, does the stock 03 deck have amp pre-outs? Or will I have to swap out the deck in order to add a sub?

I'm not looking for earth shattering bass....just a little more.

Nice. I think I'm going to swing by a local store after work and have them take a look. I just thought I'd see if there were any experts browsing around here so that I'd know what to expect. Thanks!

The exact fit is a custom Bose job. 10" sub is close, but not exact.

Stock 03 deck does NOT have pre-outs. Swap deck or get amp that uses line inputs

Circuit city is a really good place to go for stereo needs. They guarantee same day professional installation. Plus if you are leasing they will put your old system back in for free. If I'm not mistaken install is free also...but that mighta been a promotion that was going on.

I added a sub to my stock 04 stereo when I first got the car.

I went the cheapo route and didn't build an additional enclosure to put in the compartment. What I (car audio shop) did was:

1) Purchased the Stock Bose Subwoofer Panel
2) Purchased a JL10IB4 (discountinued?) Free-Air Subwoofer
3) Mounted the sub to the pre-existing bracket
4) Dynamat the hell out of the compartment and bracket

It's been in there for more than a year now and no new rattles. Sounds pretty decent being that I just wanted to add a little punch. DO NOT try to install a non free-air sub to the bracket as it'll sound like crap. If you wanna have really nice tight loud bass I would recomment building a custom enclosure that will fit in the compartment.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I really have very little knowledge of the Bose sound system in my car. Does anybody know if there's an AMP somewhere or if the Bose stereo head unit just has sub outputs?

Circuit City sucks - if you care about your car, learn to do it yourself or go to a "real" car audio place.

I just got off the phone with Crutchfield and was recommended the Kicker Competition 10" sub. Most 10" subs can be used to replace the Bose subwoofer behind the driver seat. Free-flowing subs are recommended.

Also, the stock Bose amp is back there and would need to be replaced as well to power the new sub.

I tried to fit in a 10" sub where the bose sub goes and it sounded like crap in my opinion but good luck. Dont forget u can take out ur spare tire, tons of space down there for a setup.

Yeah, but driving around without a spare tire isn't the safest idea IMO. Another good recommendation to get it to sound good is while you have the area opened up, cover the inside with a layer of Dynamat or other sound/vibration absorbing material. That'll get it to sound good!

Either way, you won't get it to sound as good as it would if it was in a box, mostly because a lot of the better subwoofers out there require specific types of boxes. But this is a good option for someone who doesn't wish to add extra unncessary weight to their cars. A heavy car won't make a fast car. So if the Bose woofer won't cut it for you (it isn't for me) and you need a cheap solution to give you some more bass response, I say swap it and use the Bose enclosure.

If I were to do it over again, I would mount the sub behind the passenger seat. It's a little annoying having it behind the drivers seat.

I don't know, IMO, I'd prefer it behind my seat considering more than 50% of the time I'm the only person in the car, and if I want bass, it'd be nice to have it right behind where I'm sitting!

It I had to choose, I'd prefer to have the bass punching me in the back as well.

The first time I ever looked at the Z's I was like ... nice... they actually put a sub behind the seat! So it'd definitely be nice, and I definitely do plan, on upgrading that sub and it's power!

I have a 10" Kicker Free Air sub installed in the Bose bracket with Dynamat and it sounds great. Also a Apline deck and Kenwood amp hidden suppling 600 watts to the sub. I was a $700 upgrade. I am very happy with my results.

Does anyone know about the rules with putting in a custom deck and sub in a leased Z?

I havent scoured the Policy yet.

As long as you put the original deck back in before you return the car, you should be fine.

They need it in it's original configuration/condition when you return it. So remove the deck and sub and they won't know/care.

I don't know what you're talking about...everyone I know has had nothing but excellent experiences with them.
