why do people keep thinking the next Z will have the GTR engine even if its NA? It will be the HR engine and 3.7L version found in current G37.

Keep the thinking simple people.

My only thing with that is marketing...

What sounds better to the consumer a 370z or a 380z

380z just flows alot better.

I guess we will see what happens. But i dont like things simple

I agree (begrudgingly). I'm sure Nissan will tune it so it will be pushing a couple more HP than the G37c (they have up till now). Keeping weight to a minimum is just an added bonus

If the info in this threads were accurate, the new engine would be a "surprise." VQ37VHR wouldn't be a surprise...

What would an NA VR do that an NA VQ can't?

It would be better news to me if the Z was using a shortened GTR chassis and an NA VR motor....That would mean easy swap of the GTR motor into the much lighter Z or just adding pistons and rods and bam.........Im sure there will be quite a few VR to Z conversions regardless in the future but just thinking out loud...

I dunno how off what I hear is. I read an article last week saying a VQ was going in the gtr. That IS probly wrong. But as far as I'm seeing the G always gets the motor we have but a little stronger. So why wouldn't we get the G's version of the vg37?? Considering were kinda the sporty version of the luxury G.... Why would they make the Z follow after the gtr. Wouldn't make much sense. And if they DID give the gtr base motor in the Z. Then that would kill sales a bit cuz of the motor option. A 30g car wit that motor or a 70g car wit that motor.... Were gonna get the 37.. Which you can't complain about. It's a nice strong motor....

that article was a joke. It was done back in June '07. The headline and text was so misleading. The engine has nothing to do with the GT-R. It is the Infiniti G37 engine. A 3.7 l engine named 360Z...c'mon. With that kind of nonsense being written it's hard to take anything else about the car seriously at all.

The VR uses closed-deck construction while the VQ has an open-deck block. It doesn't mean that the VQ can't handle boost, but naturally the VR can handle more of it.

Maybe someone who's knowledgeable on FI can chime in on how to build a VQ for boost. (pistons, rods, block guard?)

Well my main point was why would they detune the VR, to make the same or similar power to an existing VQ. Only way I see that happening is if the VR was to be the new standard motor found across all models.

I personally would love to see a Z exclusive motor...Just liek the GTR has an exclusive motor...They sell enough Z's that they could recoup r&d costs for a model specific motor....It would add to the Z's specialness if it had its own motor...

In 1995, the Z32 TT wieghed 3516 pounds. The 2008 Z33 weighs from 3320-3353. Thats less in my book. No reason to think the Z34 couldn't be less. Not to say it will, but it's not impossible.

I think most likely the new Z will be in the 3300-3400lbs range, especially if they are going to make the car smaller, i doubt weight would get any higher than 3400lbs. The 345hp 3.8L from the 380RS would be a prime candidate, and ill be all over trading mine in if so. Lets just hope they can keep the car under 40k.

Well Im of the opinion its gonna get the 3.7. I cant see any reason why Nissan would use a 3.8, the GTR motor or whatever else they have when they have 330HP one thats sitting in the G37.

Yes, it'd be a waste to use the stronger VR block and detune it for the Z by removing the turbos. I don't see Nissan doing that just to facilitate people adding aftermarket FI to this motor.

I would predict the next Z to have a high-revving VQ (like one from the 380RS) or a reduced-boost VR. I didn't include the VQ37VHR because I'd like to believe Nissan's hint that the motor would be a surprise.

***...now im leaning more towards a R35 than a new Z in 2010, unless its gunna have better power gains than what is stated in this thread.

The VR motor is HAND BUILT. Why would Nissan mass-produce something that takes the precision, time and delicacy of specially qualified engineers? C'mon, people. It's getting the VQ. That's that.

The surprise will be that the new z will be equipped with the option of vq37 or 2.5-liter DOHC engine, making the base price 25k...wouldnt that be funny.
