It was a Peek-A-Boo

Agreed, that was lame if they just showed it for a SEC!

Probably just another way of creating mystique for the upcoming car. Also, if it looks good, it may stop sales of the current car dead in its tracks.

Given their track record of the last few releases (Maxima, G37) I am afraid this Z won't be looking good.

i rarely post on here and love my 350 but if the price is truly $35k, I may just be giving the Hyundai Genesis coupe a good look when it comes out

If the choice then is to stay with the 350 or go to the Genesis, stick with the 350. Better interior, lighter (seriously), better looking, etc., etc.

I believe those cars were designed in Japan. The Z's final shape may come from the California studio that created the previous successful design.

2010 Nissan 370Z - Car News

Shorter, wider, lighter, and more powerful Z in the works.
BY ALISA PRIDDLE, PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM DREW AND THE MANUFACTURER
May 2008

The lighter and more powerful Nissan 370Z coupe and roadster could take its first formal bows in January at the 2009 North American International Auto Show prior to going on sale in the fall of 2009.

That is not to say Nissan can’t jump the gun and opt to unveil the new sports car this November at the 2008 L.A. auto show. Either way, the car is being designed as a formidable placeholder below the hot Nissan GT-R, while still leaving room for an affordable front-wheel-drive car positioned below the Z.

The big news, as evidenced by the name change from 350Z to 370Z, is the 3.7-liter V-6 that goes under the hood. The bigger engine, which produces 330 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque in the Infiniti G37, will power a new Z that is lighter than the one it replaces—a perfect recipe for fun. Icing on the cake is speculation it may borrow the seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission from the GT-R.

“Both performance and design are much more sporty,” is how Shiro Nakamura, Nissan senior vice president and chief creative officer, describes the 2010 370Z for us. The design of the second-generation roadster represents a “super evolution,” the design chief says in a recent interview. The expectation is that the new Z is wider and shorter.

While the original Z rode on Nissan’s FM (for front midship) platform, the 2010 370Z rides on the new E platform that encompasses former FM vehicles as well as some international vehicles on the FR-L architecture, which denotes “Front-engine, Rear-drive, and Large”—all part of Nissan’s platform consolidation efforts. The 370Z will share the E platform with much of the Infiniti lineup including the FX, EX, M, and G coupe and sedan.

Meanwhile, Nissan officials say they still are interested in a more entry-level, small, front-wheel-drive sports car for the brand, but not immediately. The automaker does not want to take the spotlight away from the launch of the new Z and is dealing with a full portfolio right now, says Larry Dominique, Nissan North America vice president in charge of product planning and strategy. But something that takes cues from the Nissan Urge concept—it would compete with the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Pontiac Solstice, and Saturn Sky—is expected in a few years.

If it doesn't go on sale until fall of '09, unveiling in the fall of '08 in L.A. seems a bit early... if the the 370Z's aren't going on sale until the fall of '09 as a 2010 model then I would think there would be an '09 350Z on the way? maybe car & driver is just wrong on the sale date...

I don't trust Car and Driver any further than I can throw them. Since when does the GT-R have a 7 speed transmission?

Nissan has already said that the new z will launch before end of fiscal 2008, which is March 31 2009.

http://www.nissannews.com/newsrelease.do?id=470&mid=1

The 350z already uses the E platform.

Nissan E-Platform
The E-Platform (formerly FR-L for Front-engine, Rear-drive, Large and FM for
Front Mid-ship) packages provide a compact body and large cabin, with a
sporty driving feel and comfortable ride. The platform specifically is designed
for mounting a V6 or V8 engine behind the front axle in the “front mid-ship”
position. The positioning of the engine is key to the high level of driving
performance found in vehicles including the Skyline/G Sedan and G Coupe
by providing an optimized front-to-rear weight balance and also allowing the
designers to push the wheels out to the car’s corners for better interior space
utilization. Key vehicles built on this platform include the FX, EX, M, Stagea,
Skyline, G Coupe, G Sedan and 350Z/Fairlady Z.

The new Z is being unveiled in Paris in October. It will appear in LA in November.
If the new Z is a 2010 model expect to see it arriving to dealers early fall of 2009.
The first year of the 350Z was a 2003 model year. They were being delivered to pre order customers and dealers in the fall of 2002.
