I would think that the system works off of the throttle position sensor readings, rpm and speed readings, as well as a clutch position sensor. It should be "smart" enough to notice when automatic rev matching is needed and when it's not needed. I don't see this being as obtrusive of a system as VDC or some other in car systems can be.

This is what I was told by the 370Z guy at the LA Auto Show:

When you first buy the car it's got 0 miles on it. For the first 100 miles you drive, and the car learns how you shift. Then it prints a readout on the screen showing your shift patterns and stats and stuff. At this point, it's now ready to start predicting your shifts. For instance, if you usually downshift when you're decelerating from 30MPH to 26MPH in 3rd gear, the system will start spinning 2nd gear for you in advance.

Upshifting or downshifting, it doesn't matter -- it's all about learning how you drive and readying the next gear for you.

If another, better driver gets in: no problem. The system will learn how he drives, print his readout, and then work for him as well. (Makes me think maybe you can save different profiles?)

---
Now this is almost word for word what I was told by the 370Z rep: that doesn't mean he knew what he was talking about, but there you go.

That's the same principle behind most modern automatic transmissions. They "adapt" to your driving style. Sounds interesting, overly complex and likely to fail, but interesting.

Either myself or one of my coworkers will be driving one of the Follow The Z Tour 370's next week so we should have some input on how the rev matching works out and how intrusive it is.

Better yet, don't get sport package so you don't have the S-Mode button to deal with.

Ummm print outs and spinning up 2nd gear??? Are you sure you're talking about the 370Z and not the GT-R???

what I see as a win-win situation...
you can turn the system off if you don't like.. ok, no big deal, I turn off the TCS as soon as the engine is running, one more button is not going to make me sick.
but... if you are a track junkie... and instead of a "mild and sporty" flywheel.. you get an extreme one... you can still drive into the traffic without any need to slam the gear in to don't stall the engine for the rev drop.. and, on the track... just focus on brake, select the gear without moving your feet to heel and toe and keep the line.... like almost having an "old style" sequential gearbox w/o the issue of reliability of actual smg style boxes.
