How is the reliability of a boosted 350ZHR or 370Z compared to say an S2000? I have been thinking of selling my vortech sc AP1 s2000 and getting either an HR 350z or a 370Z. I would certainly be boosting whichever Z I get since stock will just be way too slow for me.
My S2000 has been at 410whp for 60K miles now without a single issue. 182k miles all over all. The F series motors can handle a lot of power for a long time without any issues which I love since I rack up the miles quite quickly.

It seems the Z cars can take 400-450whp pretty well. Have people gotten high miles out of their boosted setups so far without issues?
I am looking to get a supercharger for the Z as I have been really happy with the performance from them in my S2000. Not as much power as a turbo I know but the lack of heat, reliability etc all make it very worthwhile for me.
I'll have to test drive the 350z as I haven't driven one before. Drove the 370z felt a bit clunky and heavy but thats to be expected from a highly modded S2000. Was definitely a more comfortable car compared to my S2000 which has gotten pretty bare bones.
Car would be my fun car and not a daily driver but still would like to drive it a lot during the nice weather months.

 

Man I personally wouldn't get rid of the s2000. The Z Shifter is not as smooth as the S, Z's are heavy! Plus the convertible is just way more fun. Plus the s2000 is gonna be a classic IMHO. Hondas

Well one of the reasons is my S2000 is 12 years old now with 182k miles. Engine has started to burn some oil and exhaust smokes a bit in boost. Car needs a paintjob and new engine and trans in not too long. So seems silly to dump another $8,000+ into a car that old with that many miles.

I have probably 12-15 grand in parts I can sell off the car and then sell the car for maybe 7k or so and get into another car.
I do love the s2000. I have had it for 5 and half years now. Bought it with 65k miles in 2007 so put a lot of miles on it!

I am worried about the Z not feeling as nimble which I'm sure it won't but the added torque would be nice as well as the newer more comfortable interior on the 370Z.

 

Keep searching for boosted 350z's it seems majority of the guys blow them up the s2k will take boost much better than a 350z

 

Even the HR motor? I definitely would make sure to get either an HR or a 370Z. I wouldn't want an older one.

Yeah I've been quite impressed with the S2000's engine handling the boost. Stock engine at 182K miles now and still makes great power. 406whp at 12 psi vortech v2 kit.

 

Have you even looked into cost of bostong a VQ? Maybe do that first then come back

 

The VQ motors just aren't reliable on boost hopefully some of the turbo guys will post in this thread. A lot of the boosted guys are on there 2nd,3rd maybe 4th engine.

You will not beat your s2000 for reliability and boost handling capabilities with a 350z that's for sure.

Just search up for yourself and see if you want to take the risk or not.

 

the VQ35HR is more boost friendly then say a vq35de but at the end of the day the f22c is a lot more stout for boost (forged factory internals), all depends on your power goals though, a lot of HR guys are running 500whp without any issues for long periods now.

 

Ok thanks guys. Appreciate the input. Must have not been reading the right places. Had read that they can handle boost pretty well. But if it is quite risky I don't want to deal with blown engines especially.

Yes I have looked into the cost of boosting them. I know you gotta pay to play as they say. I put probably 18-20k into my S2000 to set it up right so I know you can't cheap out on parts.

Ill do more researching on the matter and then decide. Might just have to up the boost some more in my S2000 for this season. Do love it but have been wanting a change recently.
Maybe I will hold out another year and then get a c6 z06 which I've been considering.

 

Stick to the S. The money you'd spending fixing a Z could help maintain your current car!

My buddy has been trying to find someone locally with a sc'd s2k to go for a ride in and see if it something he might want to do.

I don't have a boosted Z unfortunately but I do have an HR. My friend has driven my car and doesn't really like it. He said he feels like its too open inside (shoulder, leg room). The clutch pedal sucks compared to the S2k (I bought the adj one so hopefully that helps). He did like the power at all rpm's which is irrelevant for a boosted S2k.

I read into boosting quite a bit. On the HR 450-500 is safe but no one seems to daily drive them, so as far as longevity goes I can't really say. For that reason alone I decided to stay NA and buy a 300zx project car

I don't know how far west you are but if you ever want to go for a ride in an HR let me know. I'm just south of Boston.

 

One more thing if you decide to go with the 350z platform drive one a few times.

The throw out bearing noise is god awful annoying and gearbox is not as smooth as some other cars.

Supercharged S2000 is a lot of fun. It's definitely not anywhere near as fast as a same hp turbo S2000 due to the power delivery of the centri blower but it is still quite fast.
If I put the 2.2L F22 in it should increase the torque quite a bit and make it not quite as pesky as it is now. Still feels slow under 5k or so.

It's not love for the S2000 but rather love for your wallet! Also to prevent you from hating our beloved car.

Yeah these engines can handle a ton of power. Buddy has 770whp in his on the stock engine running q16 race gas.

 

I have a 2005 non rev up VQ bought it last year with 70 thousand miles right away installed a Vortech SC on it first tune was during summer with 7psi o boost hit 355whp on a 106 degree weather and 70% humidity, upgraded the pulley got 10psi now hitting 430whp on a conservative tune and tune was on a fresh weather around 68*. ooh an the miles on it 83,000 as of today. haven't had any issue.
