Default Full Syn Oil Question

Am now 70 miles shy of 1,200 miles and will be changing my oil in the next few days to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5w-30. Have read most of the older posts buried in the forum on Syn oil and when/if to change over (pro and con opinions), and have also read the vendor information on the Mobil 1 website. According to their web site, it's interesting to note these cars listed below are filled with Mobil One at factory build.

Aston Martin
Bentley Amage and Bentley GT
Cadillac CTS, XLR, SRX and STS
Chevrolet Corvette
Dodge Viper
Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles
Mercedes SLR
Mitsubishi EVO
Pontiac GTO
All Porsche vehicles

Question: Wondering how many fellow ZR owners are using Mobil 1 synthetic, how soon (if) you changed from mineral oil to full synthetic oil, And Curious if those ZR owners that have done so notice any difference after having changed to Mobil 1 synthetic oil?

BTW: Regardless of full syn extended oil change interval times I've read about, still plan on changing my oil/filter 2500-3000 miles after this initial oil change, and plan to use Nissan filters with Mobil 1 oil (although their small filter really bugs me, but it's what Nissan recommends to use - With Mobil 1 in for <3000 mile intervals, will be less concerned with the filter size).

Netman,

I switched to Mobil 1 in my 04 ZR at my first oil change, with no regrets. I couldn't tell any difference, I think any changes I may have noticed were do to the car being new. Now with almost 9k on it all I can tell you is that I rest easy knowing Mobil 1 is in the Z. I'm with you though, I will not extend the service interval based on the synthetic oil. Let me know if you have any questions.

5W-30 as recommended.

"SAE Viscosity Number
GASOLINE ENGINE OIL
SAE 5W-30 viscosity oil is preferred for all temperatures. SAE10W-30 and 10W-40 viscosity oil may be used if the ambienttemperature is above -18°C(0°F)"

The Mobil-1 oil filter works juts as well and cheaper. I have a 05 ZR and I changed mine at 500 miles with regular oil. I will wait until 2500-3000 too change to Mobil-1 5W-30.

I received free oil changes but will not let the teenagers touch my car. I have seen them change oil, ugh~!

Use the 0W-40 Mobil 1, it's a much better oil than the 5W-30. Wally World has it for $3.88/qt.

EddieJr,

Why do you say that the 0W-40 Mobil 1 is "much better oil than the 5W-30?" What makes it so much better?

For one it doesn't burn off like the 5W-30 does in VVT engines. Also it's ACEA rated A3. Which means its stays in grade for cars and keeps the engine cleaner with extended oil change routines for Europe. There are not very many oils available in the U.S. that can meet this spec let alone at less than $4/qt.

If you plan to not drive your car for extended periods, I would not put Mobil one in the car. I had a 95 Corvette that had Mobil one in it from day one. It sat for 8 months in storage at one time and when I started driving it again, the main seals started leaking oil. The mechanic that repaired said that he believed that the Mobil one was the problem because the seals won't soak up the mobil one as they will ordinary mineral based oils and will dry out if left for prolonged periods. Since that happened to me I have read that is the reason you don't put synthetic oils in most autos until around 10K mile. Then the seals and gaskets will have time to "soak up" and provided proper sealing.

Thanks, Good to know. Since my car will not sit for more then a week at a time, this would not be a problem for me. Normally take it for a run somewhere within 3-4 days (and unlikely it will ever need to be 'stored').

Will be changing Z oil tomorrow morning to Mobil 1 5w-30 (at 1,150 miles).

Sounds good. Full Syn Goes In!

After it's oil change tomorrow morning, the official "break-in" of 1,200 miles will be finally reached. WooHoo! - I get to open my 05 baby up tomorrow! Pray for full sun, it's Time to Ride!
