Default Soft top will not go up. Help please

Hey there,

I am looking for some advice... My soft top will not go up. When I push the close button the hard cover tilts back and opens. When fully open the top control unit clicks and nothing happens. The soft top stays in the down position. Do you think that this is a switch prooblem, motor problem??? Is there a fuse back there (the fuse under the hood was ok)
Thanks in advance for your help.

David

I know this is a stupid question, but did you release the latch?

Actually Yes that is kind of a stupid question. Not be be a smart *** but you did say it. Why would I need to release the latch to put the top up. To put the top down yes, but up no.

Have a good one

My bad I misread your post, thought you were having problems getting it down...

Sounds maybe like a stripped gear, don't think its a bad switch since its opening the hard cover... Should be covered by warranty I would just take it in..

Thanks for the tip I will check the gears when I get home. Although It seems that the motor doesent even move a little when the button is pushed. As for warrany I am hooped as I bought a salveged 350 and fixed it up. The damage was only it the front though.

Have a good one and I will check the gears.

FYI - I have never really seen any detailed posts on this forum about the top and it mechanics. You may end up having to go to a mech that specializes in this.

I am trying to adjust my top so that the latch in the front moves back a 1/4" but still can't figure it out.

I know there is a sensor on the passenger seat to make sure the seat tilts forward before the top will open or close so it doesnt hit the passengers head.. I wonder if maybe this sensor went out? Or maybe the cable is loose that plugs into the passenger seat?

Thanks for the tips,

I will check the passenger side seat connections. I am still at work, (doing a 38 hour shift) then heading out of town. So I will try to fix it on Sunday.

Any other possible suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
David

i believe the seat tilts at the same time the trunk cover opens up... from ur description, it sounds like the zr has already pass that stage. If there is no motor sound when the switch is depressed, it may be a burnt out motor or another fuse just for the top motor. (there is a motor that drives the hard cover and another one that drives the top) If there is motor sound, but the top is not moving, check and see if the harness connectors were disengaged from the top. The connectors need to be engaged to the top in order to move it forward. (I suspect you were able to open the top before?)

Hey there,

I am back trying to solve this mystery. All connectors look to be OK. It appears that there are two motors (one on each side that operate the top). When I push open the rear lid opens and then nothing. I am no electrical guy but would it not make sense that at least one of the motors would at least try to open the top? So I am now thinking that it must be the Folding Roof Control Unit mounted under the vinyl cover, just below the small piece of glass etched with a "Z" between the headrests.

Could there be a fuse just for the motors that fold the top? I looked in the panel next to my left foot and found nothing. The only fuse I found was in the battery compartment. This fuse must control both the hard lid and the soft top, as when I removed it neither the lid or top moved.

Any advice???

Do you have a copy of the Z shop manual? There is a whole chapter on the soft top, with information on fuse location, wiring diagram, and such. You'll need a copy of 2004 or newer since the 03's do not have a ZR. Do a search. There were a few discussions over the years, and I remember seeing sites you can down load the whole manual in PDF for free.
