I think the sub in my ZR is blown or something, not getting any base, at all... Can I just get a new one? Or does someone make an after-market drop in that performs decent? I've asked around some local stereo shops and they all say they'll have to make a custom box for it and such, all of which will be upwards of $500. I was hoping to spend no more than $150 or so. Perhaps i'm screwed?

So the open-air dont sound all that good? I'm not really looking for a ton of bass, just enough to have a little thump and some deep bass from time to time. I care more about hearing bass than feeling it.
I had a 10 inch sub that came in its own custom box (speaker faced outward) with a 200 watt amp and I was perfectly happy with it. It was in my Hyundai Tiburon though which has a hatch with back seats so I could still hear stuff back there no problem.
What about making my own box? Just buying some plywood or something and cutting it and screwing it together to fit my 10" sub into the stock location? As long as I get near the same amount of cubic space inside I understand it will sound good.

I have heard that if you want the big thump and feel you need a good enclosure. But you just want something to get by, the open air sub should be good enough. Just get the best quality open air you can get.
Will the stock amp give enough power to an aftermarket.

I have seen mentions in the past of at least a couple people installing an Infinity Basslink in that spot in a ZR...but never saw pictures or how it was done. I had a basslink in the trunk of my previous car and absolutely loved it and would love to find a way to put one in my ZR.

Stock amp can't power any aftermarket sub, it's too weak.

The Basslink? Lots of people.
Stock amp powering a sub? I tried it with a 200w rms 10" sub, all it did was vibrate, no excursion whatsoever. And suck-*** sound and distortion
you really need a box from WickedCas.com, there is a custom box for the ZR (glove box enclosure).
My box is being putting in my ZR with 10"JL. Should be done by Wednesday.

Your best bet is to glass the inside of the subwoofer port and make it into a sealed enclosure. If you're using that stock space, it's probable that you're not looking for crazy bass anyway, so you might as well use something that will sound nice but also conserve weight. Based on personal experience with shallow woofers, I prefer the Rockford P3S. But, JL Audio just released their line of W5 thin-line subwoofers, and it's likely that they'll kick ***.
