I put it down whenever possible.
(So long as I don't look like an idiot who drives a car with a top that doesn't work.) What I mean is if it's really fuggin cold out and I have the top down, people aren't saying hey look at that cool car, they're saying hey look at that frozen idiot. (No offense to the guys above.) If it's cold and in an isolated area, I will be guilty of having the top down.
There are times when it's off and on raining and I'm on the highway. If I can see that this patch of rain is only about 1/2 mile long, I'll put the hammer down and not put the top up. The aerodynamics of the car keeps me pretty dry so long as I'm doing 80 mph.

Fellow-roadster owners who love having the top down remember: it's holiday time, and people are out looking to take stuff from your car. My ZR was broken into last night while parked at Home Depot. 5:30pm - still light out, and parked under one of their parking lot lights. People are amazing.

I still drive with my top down. I have a two way pager alarm with microwave motion sensor so I don't don't have to put my top up if I just run into a convenient store.

I leave the top mostly down on my 350 Z roadster, but I also live in a rainy place. I remember reading that back in the 50s, Cadillac designed a system that would sense rain falling on a parked convertible and would automatically close the top and all the windows. Apparently, they were deterred from producing it do to concerns about safety, or some such foolish reason.
I was wondering if I could utilize an optical rain sensing switch (from one of the many cars that feature automatic rain sensing windshield wipers) to trigger my top to close by itself when it starts to rain? Anybody know of a kit, or what electronic components would be nessary to make this work?
I’ve been asking and searching around for something like this. You guys seem so smart; surely somebody here can help me with this.

Had mine since 2004, still take every chance to go top down. The world does look better topless. Since the experience with the ZR, I will always have a vert in my future.
Hey Overlord#1,
Since you are in Denver, have you had a chance to check out the group at www.MilehighZ.com? A local group with meets and such. Unfortunately I just moved out of Denver, I hung around with them for about 2 years, very friendly bunch.

My rule is that the top goes down if it's not pouring rain and/or below 50 degrees, 45 on a sunny day. I may have the windows up and the heater on but it's after all, the top is supposed to be down!
I drive 80+ miles to work (one way) each day so the top is down as much as possible. Light rain doesn't bother me on the highway; driving rain is another matter!

If it's dry and 50 degrees the top is down. They think I'm nuts but I love it. Why buy a d*&^$$ convertible to ride around with the top up? Buy a coupe and stop faking it.
