Mine had a similar problem and it turns out all it needed was a new nissan convertible strap kit that was more snug for the crossbar. Hopefully thats all it is and not a top motor...Is the top OEM?

Big congrats on the upgrade - nice choice - your new baby is a beauty! (Your first baby wasn't bad either )

Since you just bought it and the dealer said they'd fix it, I'd make sure that promise is in writing, just in case it takes more than one try to get it right.

Same problem with our ZR, doesn't happen all the time though. I'm glad you posted, as we'll have to deal with it at some point.

Don't know what the weather is like where you are, but the owner's manual does mention not to operate the top when the temp is less than a certain degree (I think it's 40 Fahrenheit). I think it's because the material the OEM top is made of loses some of it's flexibility when it is cold. Consequently it does not fold down sufficiently to nest in the area below the tonneau cover.

I have had the exact same problem. With mine they looked at it and said it was the straps (as said in a post above) but when it kept doing it the mechanics found out it was the passenger side motor. It was broken, and the part that was getting stuck was getting that way because the motor on the side was trying to compensate and do double the work. Mine eventually got permanently stuck halfway up/down, so I'd get this checked out soon if I were you. It's a ridiculous process to put the top up manually if it gets permanently stuck.

I was having some top issues like this. My issue was the rear latch would not release the top to start the process. The spring inside was really stiff so we sprayed a lubricant. We also used a light coating of gear grease on the gears. No issues at this point.

When I first got the ZR I was impressed with the quiet ride with the top up and quality of the top. After two years of ownership my top has a tear and it had the getting stuck issues. My old S2000 was an AP1 2001 model. Never missed a beat and no tears. The sad thing is that I really take good care of the top. I think I could be at fault though for putting the top down maybe a handful of times in the cold weather. Wish Nissan would offer more for all of us having top issues.

you kno what... now that i think about it.. when i picked the car up the temp was pretty low. Probably damn near 40 Fahrenheit. I wasnt going to drive with the top down I just wanted to make sure it was functional before i left the dealer lot. Cause the next morning after it warmed up a bit. I havent had the problem since. So hopefully its just a temp thing. Sinve i picked it up i put the top down about 10-15 times just to make sure it was good and it went down every time. Thanks for the imput guys!!

I agree with the elastic straps theory. My top slowly began to give out. At first it would open all the way but it would get hung up just before the cover closed. I'd have to toggle the switch, close the top then open, a few times before the top would finally go down. I realized that the center bow wasn't completely collapsing because of the elastic straps... they were completely stretched. I just bought 4" elastic bands from a fabric store and drilled out the old rivets and replaced. Worked great ever since.

DIY??? I think this is my problem. Its kinda 50/50 thing. Some days it works fine over and over. Then some days it just doesnt want to go down

Definitely temp sensitive. I didn't know about the elastic bands, I'm going to check mine out...I sometimes love that <40 drive.

Good Thread.

Yeah man definitely definitely temp sensative lol.. But I think anyone riding around with the top down in 40 below weather is a doushe bag lol.. yeah im pretty sure it has something to do with it being cold where im at now and the elastic bands being so stiff from the weather. Keep this thread going for DIY and more fixes guys
