Default Roadtser stereo upgrade !!!!

Ok Roadster owners .. as you have probably noticed by now the Roadster rear trim pieces are very different than the coupe.

If anybody upgrades their stereo and does the subwoofer or the rear speakers PLEASE consider taking some pictures of how all thet stuff comes apart and goes back together. (and then post the pictures here)

I just wanted to get that request in now in case someone was planning an upgrade.

I will probably consider an upgrade next spring. (no garage so I gotta work outdoors)

I asked this in the AV/Security/Nav/Radar section and got no answers. I have watched it being taken apart ( by my installer ) but I have no pics. I will be installing my basslink this weekend, so I will be taking it apart myself and I will shoot digi-pics.

In the service manual there is a page that shows the rear section in an exploded view. It mentions that the rollbar covers should be replaced every time that you rip them apart, I guess because all the tabs break off that hold the two parts together.

I haven't priced these pieces yet, but I am going to try not to destroy them. Bet they aren't cheap, even if you could get your hands on them. Roadster specific parts are almost impossible to get your hands on right now.

My rollbar covers had to be replaced when they replaced my top and yes, the dealer said that they had to break them in order to remove them. I checked the invoice and seem to remember the new covers costing around $265.00. Not sure if that's each or total.

holy s**t. Thats outrageous. No way am I paying that for a trim piece. I will glue the d a m n things back on if it comes to that.

Seems like kind of a screw job to require replacement of $500 ( or even $265 ) worth of plastic just to get into the back panels. geez.

I could have that alpine amp I want for that.

Default That sucks

If the roll bar covers are truly disposable that REALLY sucks. It adds $270 to the price of a stereo install.

What the heck was Nissan thinking? Are we really to belive that the engineers at Nissan are incapable of designing a plastic cover than can be re-used?

That's just odd really.

If this is true about the roll hoop cover and there's no easy solution (like regluing), this could be a real bummer of a setback to my DIY lighted windscreen kit

I checked the service manual (CD) and it does say to replace it every time. However, it looks like they just snap together.

I got an email from a guy who said he opened these up and was able to put them back together again OK. I have asked him for details. This might just mean you have to be really carefull and do it a certain way.

I just can't fathom why Nissan made these this way. A disposable piece? WTF?!!?!?! I just hope I meet that engineer in a dark alley some night. <evil grin>

Here is a picture of the moronic part.

The X in a circle means "replace each time" in the manual.

The two halves are held together with plastic tabs ( on the half to the front ) that fit into slots on the half to the rear of the car. The two bolts hold the rearward half to the car and cannot be removed until the two halves are separated.

They can be taken apart without hammering them too bad, I have now done it. You have to be VERY careful which is hard because it takes a fair amount of force to get the two halves apart. You will break a tab or two, but it will still hold together since there are about 8 tabs total holding the two halves together. They can be glued together as well, but my advice is to do all your work at one time so you only have to remove them once.

Or wear a hole in your top and get nissan to replace them gratis...

Can you get to the bottom of the windscreen without pulling the rollhoop covers off? It's difficult to tell what's conencted to what in front of the screen. It LOOKS like I need to remove piece #1 to get there, but I'm not sure what's in front of that.

Well ... this is just a wonderful design ...

It looks like an aftermarket stereo is going to get really expensive to install ... I can't imagine Nissan would have made it this difficult. What can't you get to without taking the rollbar covers off?

You DO have to take the rollbar covers off to get into the rear area.

HOWEVER

They are just $36.50 a side. Thats right, just $36.50 a side.

I ordered both front sides. Rear sides do not need replacement since the slots do not take damage when separating, just the tabs on the front piece get broken off.

Great news!!!

To get the windscreen out all you have to do is take the rollbar covers off. Then there are 4 bolts to remove. Then the whole thing just pops off.

That's not bad. So front and back would be about $70. The $265 on my invoice must have included labor.

So 36.50 * 2 * 2 = $146 total for front back both sides. Your invoice must have included labor as you say.

I thought only the front half was expendable. That's what the service manual seems to be saying. Only the front parts have big X next to them.

If you look at the pic above, all four pieces have Xs by them.

4,6,10 and 11.

D'Oh! You are clearly right.

I guess I should have looked AGAIN before posting.

However, as someone else noted, the tabs are on the front piece and they are what break off. I bet the back piece is much easier to re-use since it doesn't have tabs, just sockets.
