Convertible Top Material
The time has come for a new top for my ZR, and I'm running across two different materials.
#1: OEM Black Twillweave Vinyl
#2: Black Stayfast Cloth
The Stayfast is about $70 more than the OEM Vinyl, but is it worth spending the extra money on? I mean, it's not a huge amount of money, but is there a great advantage of the Stayfast over the Twillweave?

Explanation from one of the websites on the different material.
"Pinpoint Vinyl: Pinpoint Vinyl is a material that was used originally on most American Cars in the Older models. it looks like grained plastic. Sailcloth: Sailcloth Vinyl is a material that has a little different texture than Pinpoint Vinyl top. Sailcloth Vinyl looks like grained plastic. Stayfast: Stayfast is specially made Fabric (Canvas) material for convertible tops. Stayfast Canvas looks similar to tent material. Stayfast is also very commonly used on replacement tops for European cars as a less expensive alternative to the Original German Canvas or Sonnendeck Canvas. German Canvas (Sonnenland): No description is needed. It is the Original German Canvas. Construction: A three-ply composite made of twill weave outer fabric, rubber inner layer and a dobby weave lining fabric. Original Equipment: VW New Beetle Convertible, Mercedes, Porsche, Saab , Volvo, BMW."

IMHO if you plan on keeping your ZR for any lengthy time go with the stayfast cloth (also known as canvas & mohair), if not go with the cheaper one.

Cloth tops are:
- More expensive
- Softer
- Easier to put up/down in colder ambient temperature.
- A "notch above" to those who recognize the difference between the two.
- Require more preventive maintenance (ie: keeping it clean to resist rain).
Vinyl tops are:
- Less expensive
- Less softer.
- Harder to put up/down in colder ambient temperature.
- Makes no difference to those who just see it as a convertible.
- Require less preventive maintenance re: waterproof, but must still be kept clean.
- Less resistance to staining (depending on colour).
I put in a new vinyl top myself yesterday and am very satisfied. I got the EZ-On Vinyl top on ebay for $455 and with self install made out about $800 cheaper so now I can use that money for Volks
Hope this helps!

BTW, if you do install it yourself (which I highly recommend) there is a guide in these forums for it. Here is the link.

Make sure to have a friend or two with you to help. Preferably that are mechanically inclined or good at figuring things out. Also, when you do this its better to do it in warmer weather and make sure you have clear skies for the day and the following. If not do what I did and pull it into a warehouse with good lighting and fans.
If you have questions about anything feel free to send me a message.
