Default Any Roadsters w/NAV?

I am weeks away from getting my Silverstone Roadster and I would like to know if there is an outside sensor for the factory nav system? I was at a dealer and saw what the factory is doing for the satellite radio. It's this butt ugly pencil sharpener looking thing stuck off center on the passenger side of the roof----with the wiremold exposed. What the hell were they thinking?

I am hoping that the design of the nav antenna is better thought out. If anyone has this, please let me know.

Thanks,
HSDAVIS

I have a silverstone roadster, also, with Nav. Congrats on your purchase. the silverstone is an awesome color on this car. Anyway, your question about the Nav...I have no clue where the GPS monitor is on this car...I think it is somewhere in the front dash. In other words, there is nothing visible associated with the Nav except for the screen itself when you choose to open the panel.

Also...a little warning...when I first took delivery of mine, the Nav had a knack for shutting down, at least I thought. Actually what was happening was that the sensor on the door panel that makes contact and turns the screen on was losing contact and the display was going blank...Nav stays on. Matter of fact, Nav comes on even when the panel is shut. Anyway, I posted a thread way back and got response from a guy who had experience and knowledge with the problem. I complained to my service dept., showed them the thread, and they ordered new parts. That was back in October...said they were on back order. Long story short, it has been a long time now since the unit has shut off on me. I think somehow it has gotten "broken in" and it works fine now, no issues at all. So, if that happens to you, gently nudge the door to force contact back there and you should see the screen come back on. You may have to do it a few times. And, if it doesn't contact upon first opening the door, the door will shut itself...be aware of that. A bit annoying, but like I said, I have had no problems in about 3k miles; it's like it just worked out its own problems through a break-in period or something. If they get the new parts, I may or may not have them fool with it. Might wait till it gets close to being out of warranty...who knows. Anyway, congrats again, and "enjoy the ride"! srm

hey Zmann,
Thanks for the fast reply. I was worried that the Roadster was going to have some sort of satelite dish thing on the roof for the nav after seeing what was done to the coupe with satelite radio. I can sleep easy tonight!!

Also, it's good to know about the issue with the door on the nav screen. I am surpised that they even put a door on it. My Murano just has a cool screen on the dash board with no cover. I also understand that the '04 model has an electric door. This was possibly done to correct some issues of the door jamming. I can't imagine that I will ever have the cover shut--it's just looks so cool with the screen and all those buttons.

The date I got for delivery is Feb. 13th. I guess it may vary by a week or so either way.

Again, thanks for the response.

...welcome. I may have this wrong, but I think some of the late 03 coupes got the motorized door with Nav and all the 04's have it. Earlier, the door was manually opened. As with anything new, there is a period of learning when it is mass produced. There were very few that responded to my thread indicating they had a problem. Then again, there aren't that many Z's out there with Nav. So, by the time you get yours, whatever parts that they supposedly ordered for mine almost 3 months ago that are on back-order may be in production and you may not have any problems. If you do, just remember my experience. Also, I think it looks cool too to have the nav displayed. However, sometimes I just don't need it and it is nice to have the option to keep it hidden. The door is pretty nifty. If you push the button to open it and then don't push the button to close it before exiting, it will automatically close when you switch off the ignition and open when you turn the car on again. If you push the button to close it before switching off the ignition, next time you start the car, you will have to push the button to open it. So, it let's you have a choice about whether it will automatically engage or is manually engaged. The screen is very clear and large. In our Max, the screen is not as clear, as it has a cover over the screen that dulls the image some. Also, it looks like the color schemes in the Z are better than the system in the max. Also, the screen in the Z doesn't show audio and climate settings, so you get the full screen, like I said. When I went from my 02 Maxima with Nav to my Z Roadster Enthusiast 6 speed without it, I really missed it. When I had the issues with driving the stick and looked for an auto to replace it, I was lucky enough to get one with Nav. The Nav is like an option that I can't live without now...kind of like having a cell phone...once you do, you don't want to be without one. And it is especially useful in a car that's sole purpose is to drive and drive to new areas...at least now when we take our "Sunday drive", we'll know where in the heck we are and how to get home (grin). Good luck...I bet you just can't hardly stand the wait!!! it is worth it...and the reward...well, you may have to wait a while for a day to drop the top...but hey..I've driven with the top down and 36 degrees at night. Bundle up and turn up the heat and on the bunn warmers and you are good to go! srm

It's pretty cool that the door for the nav is automatic depending on the position it was when the car was shut off. I have to say, that since the car will be here in less than a month, I am starting to have some minor reservations about the drop top. We have had extremely cold weather in Boston (minus 10 degrees) and it's hard to even think that it will be warm enough to use this car with the top down. I know, I know, spring is just 6 weeks away, so I am trying hard to keep the faith.

This will be my second Z. The last one I had f or 10 years and had to get rid of it for a more family practical car. The 300ZX had a T-top, which was heaven. It was 5 speed stick and I loved it every minute I owned it. I really regret trading it. Also, this was my daily driver, snow or no snow, I drove this every day. I was able to get used to controlling the car in foot deep snow, after about 3 years. The 350Z will be more of a fair weather car---if it's dry and warm, I will drive it.

Thank you again, I am now all excited (once again) about my new toy!!!

Don't second guess. I've visited your city many times and I've been there when the weather was perfect for the drop-top. You have some beautiful country to enjoy from the vantage point of the roadster...hang in there, you won't regret it. Besides, I've driven with my top down at night and 38 degrees. As long as you have the heat on, windows up, and bunn warmers cranked and have a good leather coat, gloves and something to cover the old noggin, you will be just fine. 38 degrees and sunny is perfect, as well. Besides...this weather you guys have been having is NOT normal, eh?

Tell me all about it when you get it and enjoy the rush of the first drive with the top down. I had a silly grin plastered on my face for hours!

The GPS antenna for the FX is in the front windshield. I imagine that is where it is in the roadster. HS, there will be plenty of days to ride with the top down. All spring and fall, early mornings in the summer, dusk in the summer. That's if you are a convertable person. I can't believe how many convertables I see on the road with the tops up on beautiful top down days. I've had a convertable sports car continuously for the past 11 years since I bought my first one ('89 911, '96 911 C4 Cab). They gave me 2/13 as expected day of delivery also. I guess our SS roadsters are on the same ship.
