Default Window Tinting on Roadster

Hi! I just got a new Silverstone 350ZR and was wondering if very many people have window tinted their convertible. What are your thoughts on tinting a convertible? And if you've done it on your roadster, can you post some pics? I'm deciding whether it would look cool and tasteful or not.

Tint looks great on the roadster. Dealer added at no charge, I'm happy with the look.

I tinted my first roadster, and it is the one in my sig pic. I went with a dark bronze (what can I say, I like to be different). Actually, it looked really good from the outside, and I love the look from the inside looking out, all golden, and all. Anyway, I haven't tinted my current car, partly due to the fact it is winter and I drive home in the dark, I'm parked in garage at home and at work, and haven't had the urgency I do in the summer months to get it done, but I will. Another reason is that I thought I would try going without tint because when the top is down and windows are up, I like the almost seamless view around me. With the windows tinted, well, you know the windows are up because of the look. I don't know. I may see if I can make it w/o getting it done again. But I probably will simply due to the heat and light factor. It does make such a difference. But, like I said, the car in my sig has bronze tinting on the windows and it just turned out great.

The link in my .sig goes to my Roadster pics folder - there's one in there with the top up and the tinted windows (the only pic with the top up).

Oh, and the other thing I forgot to ask...if you have window tinting, how does it affect your auto-dimming rearview mirror feature? Does the rear window tint make it even harder to see out?

It seems to work ok whether the top is up or down. I don't know if the tint makes any difference or not, as it was put on by the dealer before delivery.

didn't affect the function of the dimmer. actually helps reduce the glare you would get with the side mirrors. It did make it harder to see out at night, but that wouldn't stop me from tinting again.

umm..tint on a roadster in my opinion is a waste of money. y?
rear window is tiny, u cant really see when its tinted.
tinting front windows here in BC is illegal, and ppl cant see who is the owner of the sweet roadster hehe
unless u really hate the sunshine and wanan waste a 100 bucks out of ur pocket u can do it..or some said to be unique. but y would u get a roadster in the first place if u dont like sun? when the sun is out, u shouldnt even be worring about ur window tint cuz ur top better be down!!

I totally agree with you about keeping the top down when it's sunny - is it raining? No, then is it below 45F? No, then the top goes down!

The dealer had actually tinted the windows before I got the car, but I got them to not charge me for it (I played like it would make me not buy the car) - and I think it might hepl keep the inside cooler when I put the top up when parked.

Look, tinting is not all about appearances. It keeps a significant amount of heat OUT of the car and also keeps the sun from beating into it when sitting outside and helps save the leather. Say what you will, but the top is not always down. Try sitting in traffic when it is 100 degrees and the sun is directly overhead. I don't care what kind of convertible you are in, that is not fun. That's when the top goes up and ac on. Get to moving, then drop the top. I don't even know why we're having this argument anyway. I very often ride with top down and windows up to minimize wind buffeting, particularly on the interstate. The way I see it, it's kind of like wearing sunglasses. Either you do or you don't. No big deal.

It's a body shop/tint shop behind the Tim Dahle Nissan on state in Murray. I forget the name. They did O.K. Two young kids took the car to a different building to have it done. They tore out of the parking lot. Brought the car back with the pass seat so reclined back the headrest was smashed against the rollbar.

Honestly buddy find another place.

I have always been a fan of tinting. IMO it enhances the appearance of almost any vehicle; just my taste. Ever notice how most advertised pics of cars have the windows blacked out? It forces you to focus on the body and lines of the car. We all know the Z is worthy of such attention, even the roadster with the top up.
I'm in SoCal where it's also illegal to tint the sides, but chances of being ticketed are slim especially since the top is down more than up. And I've had no problems with visibility.

Here's my pic:

Nice pic...ever have the top down but the side windows up? How does it look in that situation? I may wait to tint until the spring/summer time. Decided to put my $ into a clear bra for now!

Haven't tried the "top down/windows up" combo yet, but you've got me wondering. I'll try it later and post a pic.

The clear bra is next for me too. Driving in the dark yesterday morning I literally watched the flight path of a small rock as it zeroed in on my front bumper. Sure enough, right on target and now I have another small ding that only I can probably see, but that's enough. Definitely time for a clear bra!

So have you done the top down/windows up yet? I wanna see a pic!!! The weather is too cold in Salt Lake City for me to take the top down--had the car for 3 weeks and it's the 23rd day in row that it's been below 32 degrees...GRRRRR.

After hearing numerous good things about the clear bra for the Z, you'll be glad you did! Go for the "custom fit" install and not the pattern/plotter/pre-cut method (IMO).

Sorry, didn't get to it over the weekend, but I will on this Saturday.

What did the custom clear bra job cost you?

Store #1 does stuff with the Lexus and uses the plotter/pattern method to install and saw his work at the Lexus dealership. You will see the edges of all the plastic work there's about 1/2" or more of paint that's still "naked." Practically went with him til seeing the work at Store #2. Store #1 cost: $575+tax.

Store #2 does the custom fit install...looks great when I saw their type of work. They were recommended by the Porsche dealership. You only see the edge on the top of the bra on the hood/fenders and he was very good with his cuts, especially around curves. Canceled Store #1 appt and went here 1/2 hour later. Store #2 cost: $500+tax (the one I went with, but not because it was the cheapest)

Store #3 was another place I called from the phone book. They quoted $699+tax -- no thanks.

Visit the shops and see the installer's work and decide for yourself. Call some of the Porsche/Mercedes/exotic dealerships and see who they go through.

Mikey384, as requested," top down/windows up." This is 20% tint by the way.
