I want a roll cage/bar in my 350z roadster but it can be hard to fab one because the oem roll hoop is welded on the frame, quite beefy, but not tall enough. I went through a bunch of search online and the search function, but it seems that there is no new products or discussions about this for some time. Takeaways:
soft top has to operate normally
no aftermarket hardtop kit
takes away a huge chunk of space
stock roll hoop PITA
Limited Budget:
Ideally cost around 1.5k, no paint or coat needed (more likely for bar)
finding stable connection for the rear 2 connection points
I hope this doesn’t happen - but when overturned, won’t collapse on my head
No need to comply with any kind of competition rules.
Just make sure I will be less likely to die (not more)
Examples Pictures I find using different searches:
Stock roll hoop structure:
Example roll cage (but bolts)
This is roughly what I want, however, I would prefer all bars to be welded in, and a lower passenger/driver bar for more entry/exit clearance, if I will go with a full cage route
Dai Yoshihara’s caged Zr:
This is an ideal race cage, but I wouldn't expect the top to work. In fact, it has to be taken out before installing the cage.
Legit racecar cage details I find @cars n bids:
Ideally, everything in this cage should be done except the rear 2 posts. In my case, figuring out how to get the rear bar in is good enough. Tbh, I just want a bar to pass the HPDE broomstick rule…
You are at the same point I have been for the last year.
First fabrication guy I went to wanted to remove the convertible top and cut out the OEM cross member like your cars and bids car.
But I wanted to keep a functioning top, since I'm really not that serious of a track guy.
Maybe someday if the top breaks, that could be an option.
The BamBam bar is too short for me and intrudes into the cabin too much.
I need taller and need the seats back all the way.
I even considered just removing the top for the season, but what a complicated mess that thing is with all the steps, switches and actuators.
It didn't seem like something that would go well with seasonal removal and I never quite convinced myself if the storage lid would lock/unlock.
I'm currently working with a second fabrication guy to see if we can model something like the Flyin' Miata Hard Dog Transformer Bar.
I'll let you know if it works out, but it may be a while with schedules etc.
This looks awesome... it bolts to the cargo compartment when top is open and easily removable if you want the top up for road use?
Yes, but you have to switch to the short hoop to be able to raise the top.
Tall hoop is for the track and has the braces to the trunk.
Piece inside trunk is "permanent" as well that receives the other end of the braces.
And you have to cut slots into the trunk for braces (could get a track spare trunk lid).
Google the Flying Miata Hard Dog Transformer Bar and there are various installation videos where you can see all the pieces.
Is it perfect - no, but better than cutting off the top permanently.
And I have to find someone willing to fabricate a version for the Z at a decent price - still working that part.
And no certainty that your track will accept it.
I think most of the basic HPDE, SCCA Track night type events will accept it, but you never know.
