Unhappy Manual Mode Automatic

Here's a question for those of you who have a "Z" with an automatic transmission:

When you are driving along in "auto" mode and you are in 5th gear, and you slip the shifter into "Manual Mode", does the indicator light show 4th gear and does your car downshift automatically into 4th???

I rented a Nissan Maxima last week with an auto and when it was in 5th gear and I went into the manual mode, it remained in 5th and the indicator light on the dash said 5. I was then able to shift it into 4th, 3rd, etc...

But on my "Z", it always automatically goes into 4th gear as soon as I slip the lever into the manual mode.

I'm not sure if that's how it is on the "Z" or maybe I have a problem with my transmission.

Thanks n advance for your response.

Happy Motoring.....

There's no problem with the downshifting. Figuring that if we put it in manumatic, we want some power, Nissan designed the Z's tranny to downshift a gear.

Same here, and it makes since to me, gives you an auto downshift which I presume engineers thought that if one is cruising in 5th auto and slip to manual, they probably want some kick...also, our Infiniti FX45 does the same thing; when in auto on the highway or any road when it is in 5th and I shift to manual, it goes to 4th. It is normal; not to worry. srm

Is there a way to convert downshift toward the front and upshift toward to rear of the vehicle in manual mode? I feel that would be easier to drive!!
