Default A 5000 mile oil change interval...

never killed anybody. My viscosity was starting to get low as apparent from this oil report. Most likely because it's cheap dino oil. I also lost about ~1.5 quarts of oil in 5k miles (doesn't nissan say 1 quart in 3k is ok?) then again I also tracked the car once in this period.

Seems like everything is A-O-K with the engine. Couldn't be happier. Next oil change interval will be a bit more conservative at about 4k probably. Blackstone said to try 5k OCI again but I'd rather play it safe with 4k.

To all those who are using synthetic and changing oil every 3k miles, you're basically just wasting money... unless you are tracking the car frequently or drive it in extreme weather...

That is all.

That's ashame that noone replied here...

I am actually mailing my blackstone sample off right now and measuring the burn off today. I changed my oil on 7/04/06 and have 5,000 miles on 5qts of Royal Purple and a K&N oil filter and the engine just hit 15,000 miles. I will post my report when it comes back. I'm also having them do a TBN on this sample.

I just seach at Bobistheoilguy.com for UOA reports on VQ engines. People at that site have suggested that VQs like slightly thicker 30weight oils (even 40weights).

hmm... Apparently someone is not a cigar smoker / scotch drinker... A discriminating consumer understands there are differences among the same products...

5000 mile intrivals are fine. Hate to sound like Im standing on a soapbox but some promotional guys prob were sitting in their meeting room a few yrs back and said----Hey!!!! If we convince the American public that they need to change oil every 3000 rather than every 5000 we can boost sales by 30%.

Never forget a story my Granddad told me yrs ago. He was friends with one of the Execs with a company that made Bitters---Thats a concoction thats used in making drinks like Manhattons, Sales were dropping til someone came up with the bright idea---Hey!!!! Lets make the hole on top of the bottle bigger. Sales climbed over night. Never under estimate the power of the promotional industry. Think for urself and do what YOUR comfortable with.

And I dont want to get blasted by those that are going to say-- But our engines run hotter, Our tolerances are closer nowdays etc. He!! ,,If u want to change at 1000 miles by all means do it. It ur buck.

BTW ---Im pushing 50,000 miles and in 5000 miles I selomly ever add a full qt. And I push redline everyday

Default So many UOA's

I think I had 7 done by Blackstone Labs alone. Everything always came back great. Still didn't stop me from having a new engine put in. I was changing the oil every 3-5k with synthetic.

Bottom line is engine oil today is made way higher quality today, and to higher standards, than oil from years past.

I just wanted to prove it to anyone who might be skeptical and afraid to go beyond 3k.

You should get a UOA, you can probably do 7500 easy.

how do you change the filter without letting all the oil out?

I have always ran mobil1 and changed my oil at 5000 miles. i went to get my oiled changed the other day, and the guy try to convince me to 15000 mile package for 100 bucks. I was skeptical of this, it just doesn't sound safe. I am sure it is since mobil puts out good products.

Go for increasing oil change interval (OCI) and send oil for analysis.

If oil looks good after 7500, go for 10000. If it looks good after 10000, go for 12500. And so on.

Don't trust anyone's BS only trust hard facts and oil analysis.

I've hit 5K miles all the time on synthetic I think even 6.5K once. Engine runs fine.

I'm not even scared to put 4-5K on regular dino oil. It'll be fine.

Plus I baby my car, I use it to commute most of the time and I gun it maybe once a trip.

If it was stop light to stop light flogging I would definately change it earlier.

310,020 on 90Q45 changed every at least every 90 days [+-3 days]...........71 changes [in 16 years] so far comes out to ~~4370 miles with Mobil 1 [90% of time].......mostly Nissan filters.

Change the oil not the engine.

That's a great track record... I see your point but as long as I'm monitoring oil analysis along the way, I'll know whether I need to change the oil more frequently than I am. It's better to analyze and know rather than guess and assume. You were playing it safe by using synth for only 4400 miles, which is probably the best option, but also the most costly.

Plus I plan to switch to synthetic once the oil stops showing breakin.

Just FYI, in Europe Nissan recommends 15'000 kms interval for oil changes, just a tad below 9000 miles.

I don't understand why they recommend to change the oil three times as often in the US...

And also FYI, Bmw now recommends to change the oil every 30'000 kms / 2 years....From the 116i all the way up to the M6...food for thought...

It must be a combination of good synthetic oil, and better quality gasoline. That's the only explanation I can think of.

Good synth can last a long time no doubt.
