Motordyne XYZ-Pipe (Pilot Production)
THE MOTORDYNE XYZ-PIPE.
Its a X-pipe. Its a Y-pipe. Its a resonated test pipe, cut out, diffuser, venturi, catalytic converter all in one.
This is the first of several new Motordyne exhaust modifications to come.
With configuration changeable modules being released, it is a fully optimized merge collector with many different functions and applications. Hence the name "XYZ-Pipe".
A lot of R&D went into this. It is where the majority of dyno, emissions and variability occurs in the Motordyne exhaust system.
Motordyne can't compete with the cheapest selling systems, but we certaintly can compete with and exceed the VERY BEST.
The pictures below are small sample of what is to come.
NOTE: This merge collector (XYZ-pipe) has been fully optimized on the dyno. Both the merge angle and merge distance relative to the engine were explored and optimized.
Exhaust gases can be merged just about anywhere, but in all of the testing performed on the Z, it was found that the further back from the engine the gases were merged, sound quality, throttle response and power degraded. If it was merged as far back as the rear axle, throttle response was significantly compromised.
If it was merged via a H-pipe between test pipes, low end TQ was sharply compromised.
After aquiring enough data points of different merge points relative to the engine, a plot was created showing HP Vs Merge Point. And in this curve there was a peak between the extremes. This is how the optimum merge point was found.
Seeing that the optimum merge point occured before the usual point where the stock Y pipe, or Nismo Y-pipe merge, I created a Y-pipe with a long straight section to fill the gap to the end of the stock Y-pipe location.
The prototype had nothing but a straight section of 3" tubing to go from the optimum merge point to the end of the Y-pipe envelope. This section of straight 3" tubing was screaming out "Use me for something!"
And that is when different modules, resonators, diffusers and venturies of varying diameters were experimented with. More to come.
The picture below shows a typical 2 layer flex line on the right and the Motordyne 3 layer flexline with an inner liner on the left.
Most exhaust systems use 2 layer flex lines to reduce costs but having the corrugated bellows exposed to the high velocity exhaust gasses induces, turbulence, pressure drop, buzzing and whistling. And definetly not recommend for FI applications.
The Motordyne flex lines are much less intrusive to the flow NA or FI.
The corrugations of the 2 layer flex line on the right don't show well in the picture but they go approximatly 1/2" deep.
Note the rainbow welds on the thick stainless steel flanges on the XYZ 2.5" primaries.
These flanges won't warp when welded or torqued. NO CORNERS CUT.

NOTE: the resonator really sweetens up the exhaust tone. I give it a:biggthumpup: for sound quality enhancement. It should be able to fit on just about any aftermarket single exhaust setup. AMUSE, JIC, FUBITSUBO, NISMO, ETC.
In the picture here, the XYZ-pipe with resonator, is also shown with a catalytic converter along side.
THIS IS SIGNIFICANT.
Many times people post the question. "Which should I get? Cats or Test pipes?"
With the XYZ-pipe, you no longer have to ask that question or make the either/or compromise. Now you can have your cake and eat it too.
When you install the usual test pipes or catalytic converters, you typically leave them in place because its such a pain to take them back out. Once they go in, that's it. They're done.
This is why the question "Cats or Test pipes" is so commonly asked on the forums.
Now, you can install the test pipes you've always wanted and still switch back and forth between cats and test pipes much, much more easily.
The catalytic converter is relocated behind the XYZ-pipe (underneath the car) where you can access and switch it out with nothing more than a set of jack stands on one side of the car.
The catalytic converter, straight pipe, venturi and resonator are attached to the XYZ Pipe via a "V-band" clamp with one nut on the clamp and two bolts at the aft flange section.
Now it is exponentially easier to switch between catalytic converter to resonated or straight pipe, ETC. Its so much easier that you no longer need a lift to do it. Anyone with jack stands can do it in less than 10 minutes.
THIS IS A HUGE, USER FRIENDLY, ADVANTAGE. Not to mention being very helpfull while at the track.
The exhaust shown below is one of my favorites.
Simple, effective, sounds awesome and purely functional. Loud, but not too loud.
A progressive, exotic sound that appropriatly increase loudness with RPM. Quiet enough for daily driving and it absolutely screams at WOT high RPM. When used with the Motordyne resonated XYZ pipe, it sounds like a Ferrari.
There is much, much more to post but it will be posted after a little more progress is made.

For at least one variation anyways.
EDIT - Note that what you refer to as a tip, is actually not a tip at all. Its a diffuser.
At WOT redline, the diffuser reduces exhaust pressure drop by 0.7 psi.
Its not much, but its one more engineering detail added to design.

Its being worked on. The baseline XYZ pipe will probably be listed the same as the JIC Y pipe (while still offering a lot more capability).
Dyno plots
They are only valid when done independantly. You can be sure it will happen soon.
As for cats and resonators...
The picture shows only 2 of many different modules comming out. One of which will be a combination catalytic converter and resonator in one. It will clamp onto the XYZ pipe, giving you what is essentially a Y pipe with a built in resonator and catalytic converter.
It fits exactly the same as a regular Y-pipe. So if for example you had a Nismo exhaust with test pipes.
You can take out the Nismo Y pipe and replace it with the XYZ pipe with any add on module of your choice.
Straight pipe, resonator, catalytic converter, combination resonator/catalytic convertor, etc.
It will fit right in place of the Nismo Y pipe.
So if the Nismo had rasp, it won't after the resonator is added.
If the exhaust smelled bad due to a lack of cats, it won't if the XYZ convertor is used.
And its easy to change them out.

And that is why there will be independant testing. Unbiased, accurate and independant is the only way to go.

If I made it simple enough that it didn't confuse anyone, it would be the same, one size fits all, cookie cutter, system like every thing else on the market.
