Does anyone know a lot about remote starts? Does installing one remove the immobilizer and stock security system? I am hoping to get one for as cheap as possible as I just spent over 3k for a stereo. Anyone have any installed prices?

 

If you use a remote start with your Z, you'll need a bunch of bypasses to get around some of the stuff. You don't need to lose your immobilizer, but you'll usually lose one of your keys for the module to bypass the chip. Off the top of my head, for all the parts and labor and such will run you around 250-300.

 

Could the key I lose be my valet?

 

Valet keys work most of the time. It just sits in the bypass holder to "trick" the system that there's a key in the ignition. There are other bypasses that don't require you to lose a key. Most of the time they usually work, but for the instances they don't, that's your next step.

At Circuit City we carry Code Alarm stuff. Pretty good stuff. The most "basic" remote start and keyless goes for 99.99.

you have auto or stick?

If you have an auto, there are lots. Manual is a different story. Be careful if you have a manual as they tend to drive away when accidentally triggered.

Compustar is a great for the manual. Viper for the auto.

Tonight at 11...a 20 car pile-up today after a Nissan 350z somehow started itself and drove off a parking garage and into a 6 lane intersection. The owner said he was just trying to unlock the doors.

 

Flat rate install is $120. I checked the book today and there's a couple relays for it to work and the bypass for the chip. IMO, it'd probably be "cheaper" to have someone install it for you (my opinion out of uniform ). Would probably run you about 320 installed at Circuit City

Yeah,

Circuit City does charge an arm and a leg for rem start installs. What's ridiculous is that you actually have to pay a small install fee on the relays too.

 

i paid 200 for my install but it was worth it imo I got mine with an aftermarket alarm too so maybe thats why it costs a little more..

i got a viper 791XV great alarm wit remote paging and shock sensors, also has remote start witout a key being left in the car, i paid 425 installed

 

That's the system I want. Did you go to a Best Buy/Circuit City type place or local only type establishement?

 

Code Alarm is junk. Circuit City made a huge mistake dropping DEI. What loc do you work at that charges an install fee for relays? In my 4+ years in the roadshop we NEVER charged to install a relay. I worked at three different Circuit Citys in Ohio and the one thing that we experianced at all three locations were people who would bring thier holiday alarms/remote starts to us to fix that were put in by local 'ma and pa' shops. You may pay a little more up front at Circuit City (can't speak for Best Buy, I never worked there) but you will never have warranty issues with a larger store.

Also, you don't want an economical remote start. You want a reliable remote start. I would go with DEI or maybe a Compustar. Clifford is usually a highly regarded alarm also.

All 6MTs have built in Neutral safety switches that can be used to easily prevent the car from starting in gear. Its a factory installed switch that goes to ground whenever the car is in neutral. You may have issues trying to get a larger retail shop to hook up to such a wire, but they shouldn't refuse to hook up the remote start portion of the alarm as long as THEY don't hook up the neutral safety switch wire (the remote start will not work when it leaves the shop). You can then hook up the last wire and be done with it.

What brand immobilizer are you using that doesn't require a valet key? The Nissan valet key works perfect in the bypass.
