Default Gauge install question.

I asked this over in the performance forum but I think this is a better place. So my boost gauge says I need to tap a 12V switched source for it but the kicker is it has to be a source that does not turn off when the motor is cranked (ie: radio, etc). Any ideas where i could find a source like that in this car. Or is there even one..

I would say straight off the ignition.... now our car is rumored to do something stupid....

It turns everything off when cranking the the engine as to give the starter as much current as the battery can muster.

You can create the turn on you need by tapping the ignition wire and putting a time delayed relay into the system... if you know what I mean.

There is definately a 'true' ignition wire in the Key switch harness. Just pull the lower dash apart and look for the heavy guage wires that run up towards the keyswitch.

However, I can't think of a single reason why you would HAVE to have a true ignition source on a boost guage. Anyway, there is one there, I use it to power my VDC memory module.

No, I don't. They are heavy guage wires under the dash running towards the ignition switch, they shouldn't be too hard to find.

Cool I have a voltmeter too so I can test to find them but if they are that obvious I shouldn't have a problem. Thanks for the heads up...

umm, yeah, just watch out for the airbag wire. probe the wrong one and -BOOM-! Just a caution... I don't know that they run there for sure, just saying maybe better to look at the owners manual first... good luck with the install!

Well a voltmeter just reads voltage it doesn't produce any...but I'll be careful.

there arn't any airbag wires in the vicinity that you could mistake for any ignition wire. All the air bag wires are taped in yellow tape. With a digital volt meter its really not an issue anyway, just test lights (which you should NEVER use on a car with low voltage logic like the Z).

On the 2003 Z the true Ignition wire was Black/Red. I would scope out the harness going towards the key switch and see if you can find a black/red wire and meter it. Like I said before, it should be heavy guage wire running up toards the key switch.

Thanks for the clarification KP! I'll log that in my 'useful Z tidbits' folder. Mia, good point about the voltmeter. Guess I didn't read your post carefully enough, I though you were using a testlight.
