Default one more sub question

so i hooked up my mtx thunder sub today, 400watt rms. I bought it brand new. Im still waiting on my box to arriveso i just laid the sub on the back with the speaker part facing up. I connected the positive to the positive and the negative to the negative? It sounded like crap, all vibrating and not deep at all. Did i connect it wrong, or is it because i dont have it in a box? This one sub is double the power of my old 8" jul microsub i had in the car. Im hoping its just b/c i dont have it in a box. Let me know guys, thanks for the help. Oh, and dont flame b/c i know i dont know much when it comes to this stuff.

Without a box the sub will sound terrible. When a speaker moves it creates soundwaves on the front side and the back side. If these waves are not isolated they cancel each other out. Also, the amount of airspace on one side of the speaker vs the other side of the speaker will effect the way it sounds.
