Default Question about Capacitor.

I think that I am running a little bit 2 small of power wire for my amp. I think its an 8 gauge and im guessing that 4 would probably be better. Well since I just blew my fuse within about 15 minutes of semi loud play, i am wondering if a capacitor would take care of my problem since I have one just lying around the house. It would be the biggest pain in the *** if I have to rewire my car. Please any input would be greatly appreciated. Thx

What size fuse did you blow?

I would think that the fuse is under rated. Changing the current abilities of the cable won't keep the fuse from blowing.

If your wire is only capable of X amount of amps nothing you can do will raise this limit. If your wire is truely undersized you actually run the risk of catching the car on fire, as any excess current you pull through the wire will turn to heat.

With an eight guage wire I doubt you will have to worry about the wire getting hot enough to start a fire, but it is a possibiliy. What kind of problems are you having that makes you think you need a cap? A cap is a load, just like an amp and a battery, so adding a cap will actually increase the current on the wire.

The biggest question is is what size was your fuse to start with? You may be able to slide by by using a larger fuse.

My advice though, would be to bite the bullet and run the 4 guage if you are in doubt. Do it right, and be done with it....

well I ended up switching the fuse out to a 60 amp from a 40. the 40 was what I blew. I also ended up trading in my amp for a bigger xta880.2 since i kind of wanted a little more bass. The reason I ended up blowing the fuse it seems is cause I screwed up the install. But the question now is.... is a 8 guage wire going to be okay with an amp the pushes 880 watts rms...?

Get bigger power wires and that will solve your problem. Don't run nothing smaller than 4 gauge for your power wire or you won't get the full potentional out of your amps. I have Oct. gauge because I want everything my amps can delievery to the table.
