Default Component tweeters in factory location?

I am about to purchase component speakers and am curious what people are doing to mount their tweeters in the factory location? I want to keep it clean and preferably use the OEM grilles. SO whats the deal, do they fit under there?
thanks for any help or sugestins!

I can't say a whole lot about the subject, but my installer installed mine in the stock location. There seems to be plenty of room without having to modify the stock tweeter cover.

Mount the tweet's in with the woofers in the factory door location. The factory tweeter location is to far away to provide optimal performance. My installer made (or had) a bracket that allowed mounting the tweeters just above the woofers in the door.

Oh, you'll need to get a very small drill bit & carefully drill out about half of your factory grills because thats how many of the holes that are fake.

I replaced the 3/4" stock tweeters with 1" tweeters. Just unscrew the little bracket they're attached to, remove the screw from the back, and super glue the new tweeter in its place, then use tie wraps to attach the crossover to wire loom in the door, sounds good.

stock pods are crap

you cant cover tweeters with another grill
muffles the sound and make them sound CRAP!!!

DO NOT use stock tweet pods

put them either

a) with the woofer
b) in the kicks
c) on the dash

all 3 of those are far enough away from the ears so tweets will not sound harsh as they will in the stock pods

Sorry but im a little new to what I can do w/ the 350z's audio. How could I keep it clean and install them in any of the 3 places you suggested?
Any pics of this? Not to sound cheap, but the only way I can imagine doing any of those place would require some sort of totally customized/ fabricated stuff. I just sinked more than I expected into this project and am trying to keep it CLEAN and resonable.
thanks for any help!!

i understand you want a clean install.. me too

uhh i can only offer you this advise
once you custom you stock tweeter pods, you will realise it sounds like crap then you will have to buy new pods from nissan.. that has extra cost !!!!

if you are unsure where you want your tweeters, when you have your install, ask the guys to leave the tweeters and then YOU go buy some sticky backed velcro and YOU play with the position of the tweeters, move them on your dash, down in the kicks, play with differant angles untill YOU have decided where the tweeters sound best to YOU, sit in the drivers and passengers seat and make sure you hear both the left and right evenly from both seats..

have a passenger sit in the car with you, and find out if there legs block some of the highs, cause this is possible....
thats why i decided i want them on the dash, it is still far enough away from the ears to not make them harsh, as the stock pods are too close to the ears ...

the only problem with having your highs on your dash, you may notice the seperation in sound from the woofers, and that would make them sound a bit crappy, with me i couldnt really notice the seperation, ( only the smallest bit )
but i would rather that, then have the highs blocked by passengers legs, that was my trade off ....

i have no pics of installs in the kicks, i know there are some guys around that will post pics for you *i have seen some pretty easy installs in the kicks* no heavy modding/moulding just cutting

this pic attatched is similar what i am getting made, it will be either stuck on with silicon or heavy duty tape, that way there will be no modding/cutting into my dash, and i will run the wires up between the little gap in the zeds dash

I was able to mount the 1" tweets from my JL XR set behind the stock pods. The sound is not muffled and sounds fine. Ideally, I would have preferred to put the comp set in kicks, but I wanted a stealth install and didn't want to lose any valuable space (already a precious/limited commodity in the Z).

Yeah Doug, I hear ya...probably what im gonna end up doing. But, I am going to do some more research on different kick plates offered for our car. Did you mount your tweets yourself, or professional install? If you did them yourself, was it difficult>?
thanks

I did the exact same thing with my JL XR component set and love the sound. It's not muffled at all behind the stock tweeter mount IMO, and im picky as hell with my audio installs. Installing them there was easy. I just removed the stock tweeter by removing 2 screws holding the bracket in the sail panel. Remove the screw holding the tweeter to the bracket and pry the bracket off the back of the tweeter (it's glued on to the bracket as well). Take the new tweeter and use a small piece of 3m double sided tape on the back. Center the bracket for the stock tweeter over your new one and press it on the tape. Put it back in the sail panel and screw it back in with the 2 screws you removed earlier.

tweets installed in kicks, just cut the right size hole and pressure fit them + a little hot glue, some tweets will come with an install kit to make it more secure. Sound is great from here.
I may try what whitezed is doing...if those little pods are mass produced, I don't feel like glassing something like that. passenger legs to interfere with the high's...but not much.

My Focal Polyglass comps tweets are in the stock pod and with some songs they are too loud, I would find another place to install them! But they are overpowered with my audison SRX4, Focals rated 65 watts RMS, SRX4 160 watts x 2channels, so I gonna replace the speaker behind the seat to even it out!

i think the best thing to do would be have 1 x set of tweets on dash
and 1 x set in the kicks..

but how many people would do that !!!

and im not glassing these myself, getting it done by an installer
im not experianced with glass, i wouldnt mind trying to make these, but dont have time to mess around with it

Their is a heavy plastic bracket that was used by my installer to suspend the tweeters in the factory woofer location. I can't imagine it costing more than 5 bucks. You could also use a metal bracket but I think plastic would be better because it is non metallic. So yes a bit of fabrication but nothing major. As I mentioned before, you'll absolutely want to drill out the "faulse" holes in the door grills to prevent muffling the sound. It's a bit time consuming but well worth it imo. Someone has pic's of the Focal 165k2p's mounted this way but you'll need to do a search.

Okay, I found a pick for you. This is EXACTLY how my Focal's are installed.

not bad, that actually looks fairly easy to do.
