the old jl audio 10 w6 fits great and sounds good....not as tight as a big sealed box...but more than enough for me.

Abyss,

Does the 10w6 sound distorted at high volumes on tight bass notes at all? I had the free air IB4 installed in the stock location and it sounds crappy right now when I turn it up over about 12 on the stock head unit. I don't think I am going to be able to live with it. Sounds fine when i am playing rock music, but throw in some Dre or something and it sounds terrible.

I don't know anything about this stuff, but if I wanted to put a sub in the stock location, I would have to get an amp, right (non Bose system)? What would you guys recommend that I get to set myself up with the JL 10w6 (or another open air sub, if anyone else has a suggestion)? I dont want to go overkill on it, but at some point I will probably be changing the speakers all around, so I dont want to get something that I will have to change out later. All I am interested in right now is getting a sub to put in the stock location. Thanks.

so if you throw a nice 10" JL or something its pretty much gonna sound bad? i was thinking of making a custom enclosure right there but it would be so convenient and cheap if one would just replace the stock bose that im not sure is even hooked up..

I had my installer put in an Alpine sub in the stock location without Dynamatting the enclosure or making a custom enclosure. It doesn't sound that good. Too much drone and not enough sharp punch. I'm going to switch it out with a Pionner free air before I go the expensive of Dynamat. I'll keep you posted.

yeah, keep me informed on how this turns out, when do you think you're going to do this? im going to be swapping out my stereo pretty quickly.. the sub is the only thing im worried about, otherwise the rest of the speakers should sound fine! (one replaced by infinity perfects all the way around)

the base is good with pop/rock...but rap make the panel around the subwoofer rattle on low note....its not as tight as in a band pass box....but it sounds good enough...just gonna go nuts with somemore dyno mat see if it will tighten up the bass. I like the factory look....and im not a big rap fan so I think I'll be ok. IF in the long term I decide I want it tighter I might have a fiberglass box made there.

I finally replaced the Alpine Type S 10" sub with a Pioneer 10" free air sub in the factory enclosure. Even without any Dynamat, it sounds much, much better....almost like getting a massage while you drive....like one of those $4000 chairs you see at The Sharper Image.

I used a couple of layers of self-sticking foam where the subwoofer mounts to the metal enclosure, and even with the base cranked way louder than I'd ever want it, there is absolutely no panel buzz. Obviously, this is not the best location for a sub.......but short of making a custom enclosure, I'm pretty damn happy with it. When I get a chance, I'll probably Dynamat the inside of the enclosure just to see if it gets even better.

For less than $1000, I've got a 500 watt system that sounds like it cost a helluva lot more and the car still looks stock, which is what I wanted. The only addition I'll probably make soon is a NAV-TV system and addtional DVD player to use with my Navigation system.

Talking Since you have already been in there!

Can you guy's tell me what is behind the grill for the sub besides the speaker itself? Is there some type of speaker enclosre, or does the speaker just hang there on a bracket? If there is a enclosure, can you remove it, seal it up, and shoot it with fiberglass to make a sealed type box? Whas the scoop mang?

There is a cut out to mount a ten inch sub woofer. Search the forums...I know there are shots of this location.

This is a great thread on subs by Robero350z. It includes step by step pictures of the removal of the plastic pieces, discussion of subs, etc.

As far as pictures of the space, here's one that shows everything removed:

And this one shows a fiberglass enclosure that was built for that space. It can be done, but would probably cost $$$. Good luck.
