Not to change the story here, but why do so many Zs get keyed? It seems I read about it happening a lot here.

I don't want to toot my horn, and pray to God this never happens, but I've never had a car keyed.

Speedracer, that's a very nice HU! I had seen pix of that but never on a Z. Best thing about it is that it is close to Z's interior lighting color....though color to match with aftermarket HUs.

Thanks! I'm very much into having things match well cosmeticly. I saw this unit on this website a while back and knew I had to have it when I did my audio upgrade. The color match is, in fact, perfect to the interior lighting of the Z, as is the styling with the brushed aluminum and round dials. The lettering on the unit also illuminates red and therefore matches the red on the stock gauges as well. It has great DSP functions including several different imaging functions that have been very helpful since I have a roadster and the sound is WAY different with the top up vs. down.

What ever you do avoid Alpine CDA-98xx line like the plauge. They are HORRIBLE!

Here's why:
The sound is very difficult to get right and there are controls that are not explained.
The Sirius controls are the worst I have ever seen; you can't change channels and have the channel name displayed immeditaly, it cuts off the end of long song titles & channel data, the catagory search is so flakey as to be unusable.
The controls are inconsistent, they change function depending on what you're doing.
Browsing MP3 folders is a huge pain and again the display is retarded. I don't care what folder number it is morons, I want to know the folder NAME! (this is the same idiotic functionality as the Sirius portion where it tells you a number instead of a name, it makes you wait 3 seconds to see the name).

Overall I am boycotting Alpine for the azz raping they gave me on my 9835. Not to mention that their higher end units are stuidly high priced compared to the Eclipse series of units (http://www.eclipse-web.com/)

No disprespect, but Oh MY GAWD! That has got to the be ugliest HU I've ever seen. It looks like one of those crazy boom boxes where they glue all that plastic on them to make them look "cool."

But hey, to each his own. If that's what you like who cares what I think. =)

I have the above unit, and everywhere I go where people are into cars, the above head unit attracts the most attention, esp. when I display the features. Like you say, to each his own, but what really looks like your second picture is the single din Alpine units that people put in the Z dash, they look so out of place and tacky that they make me sick. Esp. those wierd green slanted buttons. Those units remind me of when people used to mount aftermarket radios under the dash.

Well.....I guess it was bound to happen sometime, but you are the first person that has had ANY kind of negative comment about this head unit. If you find it ugly, you must also find the interior of a 350Z ugly. The design of the unit so perfectly matches the interior design of a 350Z, that you almost have to do a double take to realize it is an aftermarket head unit.

While the boom box you have shown is, no doubt, tastelessly excessive, please explain to me how two round dials make this head unit tastelessly excessive. The interior of the Z has a "round" motif in combination with brushed aluminum accents. The main gauges, auxillary gauges, side air vents and climate controls are all round. In fact, the dials on the Sony head unit are almost exactly the same size as the auxillary gauge pods. The illumination color is a perfect match. Even the light-up red lettering on the head unit matches with the red needles on the gauges, and the brushed aluminum face is a perfect match to the interior of the car. It also has a level of sound customization I have never seen in any other head unit.

Obviously you are entitled to your opinion, but if you make a blanket statement like "the ugliest head unit I have ever seen", please try to give some objective details about why, just as I have given some objective details about why I think it is a perfect match for the 350Z interior.

Default Alpine HU

I have a sweet Alpine Japanese Double DIN head unit I have decided to sell, and would love to see someone with a Z buy it. Forgive me for posting this here, I thought it would be relevant:
