I don't have sirius in the Z, but I had sirius on my other car and liked it a lot. There are a good number of techno (channels 61-66) and hip hop (40, 42-45), and I typically find something I like to listen to. I want to get sirius in the Z, but was looking for a portable solution like the XM MyFi. Unfortunately Sirius doesn't have anything like this, so I'm probably going with XM next.

Actually they have one coming out this month I think the model is like S50-T?? it's kind of pricey but what I had read said it also could hold mp3's and such as well as Sirius Programming. Looked pretty slick also.

I have sirius and absolutely love it in the Z. I have the very small unit that can fit easily into the navigation area, obviously i dont have that option on my touring.

for techno fans i think you would be more than happy, there are quite a few of those channels. i am not into that stuff so i personally dont know if the stations or music on them is any good. i just know there are a lot of them. now on the hip-hop side to be honest i think sirius could have more. there is only 4 or 5 channels. they are good though. i am into old school so the channel "backspin" is one of my favs, and shade 45 (eminem's channel) is very good also. specially the afternoon/show with rude jude and lord shear i believe.

then for the weekend, sports is kicka$$ on sirius. get NFL, all games, most big conference football games, as well as basketball (college and NBA), NHL, and i guess in the next year NASCAR is moving from XM to Sirius.

so if you cant tell, i say go Sirius versus XM.

love it so much, i put it in both cars.
head units were 200 + ship and the Sirius was 75+ ship.

The S50 doesn't have a walkman type mode where you can listen as you go, and only works in a docking station unless you listen to prerecorded content. The Delphi MyFi and Pioneer Airware are much more capable and if they had sirius versions, that's what I'd get.

I'm not familiar with the S50-T, maybe this is an upgraded version, but the S50 isn't even out yet. It does look nice, but really is limited in ability and more bulky than the XM MyFi radios.

Here's a review of the S50:

You can listen to SIRIUS on your computer via the SIRIUS.COM web site for a limited trial period. You should do this and see for yourself.

A lot of the current SIRIUS Satelite receivers have large orange displays and develop a lot of heat. I had one burn-out on me. They did replace it for free because it was less than a year old.

I was told that SIRIUS will have new technoligy receivers very soon. They will be smaller and will NOT have the heat and display problems.

My opinion of SIRIUS programming is that I like it enough to subscibe to it BUT some of their music stations are somewhat repetitive in content and limited as to what they play.

See my install thread as to how to wire a SIRIUS receiver DIRECTLY into the BOSE head unit

I listen to SIRIUS in my Z with the tape adapter and the sound is just fine. If you want information on SIRIUS, fool around at http://www.siriusbackstage.com and look at the forums section. You'll find nearly everything you want to know about the music played, the different types of hardware, etc.

I have Sirius and absolutly love it! For techno, channels 33-37 are the new techno channels(they got moved for some reason?). 33(Area 33) is my favorite techno channel.

The only problem I have with Sirius is this: They recently made a deal with Sprint, when you call sprint and are put on hold you are listening to a few channels of Sirius radio. Well, due to this they started censoring the music played on these channels. And of course, one of those channels happens to be my FAVORITE channel, Alt Nation 21. It sounds horrible now! Whenever a song has a bad word in it they have to remove it digitally, which basically reverses that tiny clip of music making it sound like a brief period of the song being re-wound. It sounds absolutly horrible and I have voiced SEVERAL complaints about it. The fact that they would upset hundreds of thousands of listeners to make a few bucks really ticks me off! I mean, we're all paying a good amount of money to listen to music, then they go and try to make MORE money.

Sirius and XM use different audio comresion methods. Sirius has better sound quality in the higher frequecy range. (clasical music)

XM has better sound quality in the lower frequecy range.(Rock or Rap)

As far as music programing goes XM and sirius are very similar. The big differnce there will be thing like Opie & Anthony VS. Howard Stern.

If you like sports XM has almost everything with the exeption of the NFL wich Sirius has.

Not really...the only sport that I know of that XM has is the MLB. NFL, NBA, NHL, college, and soon to be NASCAR are all on Sirius.

Another thing I've noticed recently. As soon as I switch to Sirius from another source I have to turn my subs WAY down. There is always a VERY strong bass track coming from Sirius, no matter what type of music I'm listening to.

that might be a source-unit / wiring / deck thing, mine is the exact opposite...

I must respectfully disagree. They needed to get 1 million new subscribers just to pay for Stern, I would say they have done that and more. Before they signed Stern they were at around 600,000 subscribers. Now they are way over 2 Million subscribers, close to 3 Million. And this is before Stern has even GONE to Sirius. Imagine how many MORE subscriptions they will get in January.

Are all these new subs due to Stern? Of course not, but I would argue that a lot of them are and even the ones that aren't directly due to Stern are actually creditable to him due to the attention Sirius has gotten from Stern's pending move.

<edit>

As far as the quality of the sound for Sirius; it's definitely not CD quality but I think it is a bit better than terrestrial. The sound quality could really use some improvement though.

while it's far better than AM/FM, i agree the sq could use improvement, but in a limited-bandwidth world that means cutting content, not something they are likey to do ANY TIME soon. what i do NOT understand/like is that there are to be TWO howard stern stations?!?! uh, there's only one guy, i don't want to waste bandwidth on shows "inspired" or "created" by him....

From what he was saying last week there will be an East Coast feed and a West Coast feed, hence the 2 channels.

But you are correct, he says he will have a 3rd channel (it isn't listed yet, don't know why) as well that will be stuff like the Wack Pack shows. Also he hasn't said if the 2 main channels will just repeat over the day or if they will have new content like the Wack Pack shows.

I'm guessing he will have the extra content after his live show at first and maybe replay the day's show for the overnight.

Default Sirius Starbase in the Z?

I have Sirius in my other car and at home -- it's a terrific product. I've been reluctant to swap out the Bose for a new head unit, and as an alternative am considering the Starbase, which would fit right into the nav compartment. Anybody has experience with the Starbase?
