depends on what you want done. obviously the bigger the job the more you are going to save because labor is so much more expensive than materials. i dont know the actual cost of materials but a few years ago a friend of mine paid a grand for installation of 2 subs and 2 amps in the trunk of his jetta and there wasnt even that much fiberglass. i paid too much in my opinion, but materials would be no where near that.

I was quoted $500 2 yrs ago from a local shop to make a sub box to fit the stock location. I ended up FGing one in the tirewell for about $100 in material. You could probably do better if you buy the stuff from a boat repair shop in bulk. I went with gallon cans of resin, and medium sized packs of cloth and mat. You can find some good deals on this stuff at ebay too.

Basically, you need the resin (few gallons), large packs of fiber cloth and mat, Short bristled brushes, latex gloves, mixing cans, and a respirator to do the job. Beyond that you may need cutting tools, a sander, MDF wood, screws and other hardware based upon the type of box you're building.

For me it was worth it. But for others it may not be...I mean you can get an MDF strut box pretty cheap these days on Ebay. Also, FGing is messy, smelly, itchy.

good luck.. here's a pic of my latest project with Fiberglass..angled 6.5 spacers using Birch and poplar cutouts, fiberglass, and bondo.. .5 inch on one side, 1.5 inch on the other. I'm still sanding and should be done soon.

So far my project cost me about $225.00 but i haven't done the finishing part yet. Bondo, everglass, rage gold, sand paper, high build primer, and paint will cost me somewhere about another $150.00. I've been doing all the work myself so i don't need to pay for the labor.
