Default Idea - Use stock radio faceplate with new stereo

I had the idea the other day to use the factory faceplate with my cr4ppy Alpine unit. I love the look of the stock radios, how they follow the curve of the dash, and it got me thinking...

So, has anyone tried this? You would of course have to use the pots and buttons of the OEM radio and wire them to your replacement radio, extend the LCD display (I'm not too sure how easy it would be to actually use the built in one), and line up the CD/DVD holes, but over all it doesn't sound impossible.

It would be incredibly hard to use the stock LCD. Doing the rest is more possible, but a hell of a lot of work and risk to your $$$ head unit.

Well I'm replacing my head unit anyway, that's what made me think about it.

I meant a risk to your NEW head unit. I understand you wouldn't care if you broke your old one.

Let me clarify: I already have the Alpine, that's the one I would use for the mod, that is the "old" one. I'm replacing that with one of the Eclipse AVN units (haven't decided if I want to wait till they fix the AVN5495 or just go with the AVN5435). So, when I get that new AVN unit I have no problem breaking my "old" stuff and my OEM stuff.

I was really just trying to find out if anyone has already done something like this.

You just wanting to play around with it and see if it would work? I'm sure it would be possible to make it work, but it would take lots and lots of testing and some fab as I'm sure you can't get the specs anywhere.
