Default Custom Sub Box Pricing

I met with three installers from a very reputable car audio store today. I had everything laid out how I wanted it as far as the HU, XM, front components, rear coax's, and amps but did not know what to do about the subs.

They proposed the following in addition to what I had already planned:

Build a box out of MBF that would rest between the rear speaker bar and the stabilizer. Mount the two subs pointing toward the rear with a grill to protect them from any objects I might throw in the back, (golf clubs, camera gear, etc.). The top of the box would slope down toward the front to mesh in and trim out evenly with the rear speaker bar. I have black interior so I would go with just black carpet. Oh, and I will be using two JL 8" W3's.

The price they quoted JUST for the box is $550. They guarantee it will fit perfectly and won't move around or look shoddy.

Is this a fair price as they will have the air space exact for these subs and be able to trim it out as they do on a daily basis.

Thanks,
DD

I believe in the latest issue of Sport Z Magazine, someone has already introduced a dual sub enclosure that sits underneath the rear strut brace. The subs face the rear and mild angles. Unfortunately, I cannot remember who was offering it, but it was listed unde their 350Z "Goodies" section.

If I read my estimate right, Tweeter quoted me $400 for a custom fiberglass sub box to fit behind the seat (in the OEM location) that seats 2 8" JBL subs like Skidazzle's install. that just for the box, not for the parts (ie cables, and subwoofers themselves)

That's a small area, like 1.4 cu ft. Seems a bit small for two enclosed subs. I am having an enclosure made that will seat a 10 in that space. I would have another shop quote you before you went with the two 8s just to be sure.

GamblerZ (or anyone else): Is there anymore information available about the pre fabbed enclosure for the Z? (from sport z magazine)

1.4 cu ft. is plenty of airspace for 2 8" subs in a sealed enclosure. Now if the enclosure were a ported design, then I would agree that 1.4 cu ft. is pushing it (for some subs anyway). I was going to use a single 10" sub, but I've pretty much decided to use 2 8" subs (probably Image Dynamics).

Yes, the 8W3 JL's I will be using require very little air space so I'm not very concerned about that. (one of the many reasons for choosing them).

Since I could not find an issue of Sport Z in my area, I emailed them and Dave replied with the link and phone number of the company that has a prefab box for the Z.

I checked their site but could not find a box as described above but they may not have updated it recently. I will be calling them to find out more and will post the info as soon as I have it.

As mentioned by STLZ, I believe this is the sub built by Nazar as the phone number and name of the company are the same (I haven't seen the magazine article). He posted many pictures of the sub enclosure he built and offers it as an unfinished enclosure or finished. The enclosure fits perfectly under the strut bar and a bonus is that you could mount an amplifier (or amplifiers) on the front "face" of the enclosure. The thread on the sub enclosure is here. You can PM Nazar with the link above or call him at the number listed. He's a really great guy and also has about the best prices on stereo equipment that I could find.

Just to save people some time, here are links to pictures showing various stages of the sub enclosure - unfortunately I couldn't get the pictures to post here....

I'm going to try and borrow a digital camera from someone and tell the installers to take pics of the process for me. The guy there seems pretty cool and I'm sure he'd do it. Skid had very similar tastes to what I like, so I showed them pics of his install for a template.

Putting Boston RC620s in the front
Alpine 7894 HU with dash kit
JL 300/2 Amp for the fronts
2 8" JL subs behind drivers seat in custom enclosure, stealth
JL 250/1 Amp for rear

I'm not sure if I want them to install my video system while they're in there, but we'll see.

I payed 100 for my box and it sounds close to what u want.. it was only for on sub a 10w7 but it would probably not cost more then 200 for a box that holds 2 subs...

Wow! Thanks man! That does look like what I'd like to do at a price that fits my budget!!!!

I would like to see a lower shot of it from the rear with the hatch up. (to see high the box rises above the bar.)

I was scanning through a few shots and it appeared that you are in Georgia, then seeing a plate confirmed my thoughts. I'm up in Nashville so driving down there to pick it up would be a good excuse for a small road trip.

If you could take a few more shots I would be greatly appreciative. Oh, who did you purchase it from or was it a custom job for you?

If you'd like, you can email the pics to rw@robwattsphoto.com.

Thanks again!!!!!!

Check out some threads that I started and later posted pics in regarding my sub enclosure. This was done in Nj, but could be easily replicated. Any details you need I can easily give you. I should cost you about$5-700 depending on your shop. Count on it being at least a full days labor for the install. It is half MDF half Fiberglass. I lost virtually no storage space, and gained great sound.
