I just saw that the bose system has an amp in the rear of the car (back left corner) under the floor mats.

Does the NON Bose system (no coassette) have an AMP? Or is the head unit powering everything?

Everything for the non-Blose is contained within the head unit, with respect to power.

I'll have details in the next week or so about making a mount for a small amp to install where the Blose amp normally goes. Stay tuned.
