A combination of the headunit and the amp. But mostly the amp settings (gain, bass boost, frequencies, etc.).

Every DD I have ever heard was LOUD AS HELL and pounded like crazy. Forget control or SQ for most of their line, they are SPL machines.

If you are looking for a subwoofer that will be louder than any other subwoofer on the market then DD is the way to go. In a Z I would not recommend one though because they need ported enclosures to perform to there potential. For the money you can get better subwoofers that will perform good in a nice sealed enclosure. This coming from a guy who owns 2 of there flagship line DD9910's.

Depends on what you are asking. There are two types of tuning:

Box Tuning - ie - box resonance frequency. This is used with ported or passive radiated systems. The box volume, port area (or passive's cone area) and length of port (mass and complaince of passive) will all determine the tuning frequecny at which your Helmholtz resonator is aiding your active transducer.

Fine Tuning - tuning your system via an EQ ... either external processing or an internal EQ in your head unit.
