Default dopey questions

I've read many of the threads here. I will admit that I know nothing about audio in general and even less about car audio.

I do know that I got a post-fix Bose system in my touring model and that I am dissatisfied with the sound. It sounds muddy. It's not crisp. It sounds dull.

I want to replace the Bose system.

1)Will simply replacing the head unit do anything?

2)Can I replace the head unit and amplifier and leave the speakers intact?

I hope to get a solution without doing one of the very complex custom installs that we've seen on this thread. I admire those systems, but I don't need that level of volume or sophistication.

Help me before I spend again.

Simply replacing the head unit will not work. Bose has external amps on its systems. I don't think you can hook those up to an aftermarket unit.

As to the second, I'm not sure that's an option either.

The best thing to do would be to buy a decent aftermarket HU, with about 45x4 watts of internal amp power, then replace the speakers. You can get pretty good ones for a few hundred bucks. You will lose the subwoofer, but it's probably not that bad for the regular guy.

Anybody else with some ideas?
