Default Original bose HU + new amp/speakers?

There have been a variety of suggestions with regards to dealing with the BLOSE problem. Keeping the original head unit and adding new amps (to rid the audio idiot,,,,um I mean pilot) problem, in addition to new speakers seems to be a recurring theme. I am interested in this approach because i like the looks of the stock bose and like the 6 changer in dash thing.

Has anyone done this mod yet and if so are you happy with it?

In your opinion does the Head Unit "NEED" to be replaced?

If you kept the HU and did other mods and are happy please list the mods and pics if you have them.

I know that sound is an extremely subjective subject. I am a professional musician and sound engineer at a recording studio and I am interested to see what other people think.

I added an Alpine 450 watt amp, speakers and a sub to the base head unit stereo. It sounds very good, but I think replacing the head unit with something that offers equalization and better overall CD quailty would improve the sound a great deal. I like having it look stock, but knowing how much better it could be has me thinking about replacing the head unit with either an Alpine CDA 7892 or a Nakamichi MB-75 (in-dash 6 disc changer/receiver) and Pioneer DEQ-7600.

That's exactly what I did for my install. I kept the factory HU, sent the signal to a Cadence CEQ-650 5 band EQ whcih cleaned up the signal and sent it to an MTX 4405 5-channel amp. From there, the front and rear signal goes to two sets of Cadence ZX6 6.5" components and the sub channel powers an Image Dynamics IDQ 4Ohm Dual VC 10" sub in the factory location. Check out this thread for pics... https://my350z.com/forum/showthread....threadid=16783

I think it's a great way to install a stealth system and really have great SQ. I didn't go for SPL but that IDQ 10" can really pound. I'll be picking up the finished product in the next hour or so, I'll post the final pics then. Enjoy...

Before I replace the HU, I'm going to add an Alpine ERE-G180 EQ to the system next week and see if it dramatically improves the sound.

Default alpine eq

Are you just adding the Apine eq with the rest of the system stock? That sounds like it might be a really quick fix. Let me know how it sounds. If you changed out other parts let me know. Good luck,,,,,,

On the post above, I listed the other changes I've made. The EQ should help even more.

I added the Alpine EQ today. It does sound much better, and I'm not sure an aftermarket head unit would improve it that much more. For now, I'm happy.

Default new eq

So now that you have had the new eq for awhile, what is your assesment? I know you said it is a big improvement but is it a fix or just a bandaid. (no pun intended ) Have you decided if you are going to change out the HU yet?

The system sounds pretty damn good right now. The EQ really cleaned up the sound, especially the signal to the rear speakers. If I ever do change out the HU, I'll probably add a DVD and NAV-TV as well. I'm not sure I want to put that much more money into the Z yet...... there may be other sports cars on the horizon I may switch to.
