Rear-View Mirror Radar Detector Mount
#21
check out radartest.com. a few radar detectors have the same level of detection capability but differ in price due to certain options. my 8500 picked up Ka at 1.5 miles. that's as good as any detector on the market. valentine 1 has the direction display though which is useful. for laser, the ZR3 seems to be ranked the best. the ZR3 also can be linked into the 8500 which is the setup i have in my Z. i 've taken a few road trips with the 8500 and it has lived up to it's expectations. some folks say that radartest.com is biased with their reviews. i have yet to see any evidence of that.

If you have the rear view mirror with the 3 wire plug, 2 of those wires provide ground and 12 Volts that switches on and off with the ignition.
I simply used a wire stripper and stripped just enough insulation to get to the wires.
Then you solder your power plug paying attention to the proper polarity, put some shrink tubing over the solder joints and you are done.
On the Escort which I have, it uses a telephone style plug for power. I got a cheapie black telephone extension cord from Radio Shack and cut it down to about 5 inches long. On the Escort with that multi wire telephone plug, Finding out which 2 wires provided the 12 volt 's took a little bit of thinking.
There is a simple trick for that which involves using a telephone extension cord connector with the Escort power plug and checking the stripped end of the extension cord.
Confusing but a simple drawing if anyone wants will make it crystal clear.
By using the telphone extension cord, This lets me leave the cigarette lighter plug 'unharmed' for when I want to move the detector.
I forget which of the 3 wires are + and - but if this post is of any use to someone, I can go back and check
OR
Simply grab your voltmeter and find out yourself. Like everything on this car, the plug is tiny so be careful(I already did) with the meter's leads or you will blow the fuse

I have a Valentine RD and just purchased a Premium (HomeLink) mirror from eBay. It has the small three prong plug you mention, but I will have to wire it to the fuse box myself. (I don't have the premium package(g35) - 2tall - no sunroof)
I'd like to do what you did and only run the mirror lines all the way down to the fuse box.
Thanks.

If vector 985 is just as good or better than passport, i can get one for 50-60 dollars less than a passport 8500 at the place i am looking. please let me know you guys opinions. LASERs have also been popping up around here lately and i really don't want to get popped by one of those.--any solutions?

I have not had a chance to check mainly because I forgot that I have wrapped the soldered wires with black electrical tape and need to dig out my volt meter and check the plug end.
I'll do it this week and post a picture or 2.

Fascinating stuff.
I got buried in the videos on Laser and lost 2 hours
I knew that these laser detectors were only good for telling you to pull over but I did not know that those guns can see you from nearly 2000' feet away!!
That is much farther than I could see a car on the side of the road.
I also learned that quality rade/laser detector's will go off at those long distances. They recommended the Valentine,Escort X80 and the Bel as ther top three.
Those things are deadly and I know in my town the local police use Lidar cause my X80 went off 2 days ago as I was driving down the road and I went by him.
Lucky I was not speeding.
What is interesting is the video where the guys tried out that product called VEIL on a Vette,an A4 and an EVO.
The bottom lline is that this stuff is a coating that cuts down the distance by well over half that the laser gun can get a reading. Meanwhile your detector is beeping away for twice that distance.
I searched this forum and found nothing on that stuff.
I wonder what it looks like on the headlights on our Z's?
Sure don't mind coating the license plate with this stuff but not sure about coating the lights.
Oh yeah, it also talked about color of the car and the shape. Our Z's will not be good targets for the really long shots and RED is particulary a tough color for the gun to work on.
So, anyone in here using the VEIL product?
Thanks

Many also feel (as I do) that with the effectiveness of current laser jammers show the use of VEIL is not necessary. At $89 a can, the money could better be put towards an active laser jammer.
In short, VEIL doesn't work all that great, it's expensive, looks horrible on your headlights, and is virtually obsolete when compared to the current active laser jammers that are out today.

I was going to start a new thread, but I did a search and found this topic, so I figured i'd add on to this.
I am going to hardwire my Escort today in my 04'. Originally, I was going to hardwire it to the fusebox. But then I was thinking, being I have the homelink mirror, is it just easier to tap into those wires?
- If I went with the fusebox route, which fuse should I tap into? And also, where is there a good ground down in there? I was looking for some metal, or some screws that are already there, but found nothing.
- If I went the homelink route, which wire is postitive and negative?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i had a similar question. people's responses were helpful:
https://my350z.com/forum/audio-video...-fuse-box.html
havent gotten around to locating the fusebox yet.. hope it's in the same place in the 08. Also, that add a circuit thing cant be found at local autozone or pepboys (or on their sites for that matter), so i think i will buy from amazon.

hey thanks for the reply.
I am still torn if I should wire it though the fuse box, or through the homelink mirror. I'm thinking it will be easier to tap into the negative and positive wires on the homelink with wiretaps. Anyone know which is positive and negative on an 04?
