One of the 3-wires on the mirror is switched (meaning it's only on when the car is on).

If you're wired to that wire, shouldn't the V1 turn on and off with the car? That's how the 8500 wired into the mirror works.

Yeah, I have mine wired into the mirror and my V1 goes on and off with ignition. I just leave it on when I take it with me. Then when I plug it back in, it's right where I left it.

Regardless of what you get, the Mike's mount and mirror wiring is a must.

I have a interesting/annoying experience.

The FX45's have that radar/laser cruise control that sets my V1 off full-blast when ever they pass travelling opposite myself.

The Chevy Blazer has a third brake light that activates the laser a/lert when you are behind it.

Anyone else experience these?

^^^ Those are known issues for all radar detectors. Mike Valentine even goes into both of them in detail on his site.

For future reference here is the link describing this behavior.

I own thr 8500 my main concern is durability I have had mine for 3 years and I't constantly saying service required, and it is always self calibrating they are defenetly not rugged enough... I have heard of the V1 being a bit more rugged.... I will be buying a V1 if this is true.. as far as being able to detect Ka and K bands as far as 3 miles I never experienced this, maybe 1.5 miles on flat land on a Ka and 2 for K band, Laser detection is still too primitive for any detector.... I prefer the Passport with the Jammers these are pricey but worth the money these are guaranteed to beat all form of detection....
My advice don't buy the passport unless you are strapped for cash, save up and go with V1 or find the Passport system with the Jammers....

I got one ticket when i first got the Z, after i bought a passport 8500 I havent received a ticket. I get alerted pretty far in advance if there's any Ka or k band radar guns. I have been hit with laser and pop 3 instant on, i had to slow down pretty fast those, i didnt get caught though. Even if you get busted with laser, and you slow down really quick, a ticket for 15 miles over the limit is better than 30 miles over. If you value low insurance premiums and a seemingly clean driving record buy a passport or V1.

Yeah. What's worse is that when it's dark, people slow WAY the hell down too. So during the day you might be going 85mph but at night the flow is like 50mph. Crazy peeps.
