Default Radar Detectors, worth the money????

if want to know if the pricey radar detectors are worth buying. if you have a high quality radar detector, leave some input as to how many speeding tickets you've gotten since you installed it.

I've had the Z for a year and a half...speed most of the time and drive the Z like it was meant to be driven

For that year and a half i've owned the VALENTINE 1 and yes it has saved my butt more times than i can count on both hands and feet.

I have had a V1 for over 5 years now. It is worth its weight in gold. It won't save you 100% of the time since some cops just sit a blip their radar and if there is no traffic in front of you for him to get first you are screwed. But it has saved me more times than I can count.
Plus I like the way you can just sent it in from time to time and get updates installed in it instead of buying a whole new one.

I think I got two in a decently short period of time without my Valentine 1. After installing I have not got a speeding ticket since and feel confident driving on any road. I think it is definitely worth it, even if you don't have a million close calls where you're like "Thank god I bought this", you will still be glad you bought it.

passport 8500 here, love the thing. as long as you dont use your radar detector as a crutch and use it more like an aid, its wonderfull to have. just dont depend on it soley to keep you from getting a ticket. always use common sense and caution first.

The passport 8500 x50 is supposedly better than the v-1...however they are pretty close.

And yes you have to use your radar in addition to smart driving. Don't speed over blind hills or thru blind turns. Watch onramps as you drive by them or behind columns under overpasses. Always slow down at spots where you have seen speed traps before (this theory has saved me several times). Look for brake lights, speed in packs of cars not by yourself. All of these combined with a good radar...either the 8500 or v-1 and you'll be good to go.

P.S. don't waste your money on any radar other than the two mentioned above.

I've gotten no tickets in the two years I've had my V-1 (that's with two motorcycles and the Z). Prior to that I got about 1 a year.

V1 are supposed to be the best out there. I have a PNI Silver Bullet and that hasn't let me down yet. In a lot of write ups I saw, when I was shopping for one, it was always in the top 3. I think I payed about $120 for it, the V1 was the most expesnive and just out of my budget at the time, now I can afford one and I just don't see paying that much more for something I already have proven faith in. Passports and Escorts are supposed to be good also.

V1 just gave me two readings of no less than 3 miles warning.

I have a ritual of patting the V1 everytime it saves me...kinda makes my arm tired.

Good thread. Thanks.

Apparently V1 or not when you're going 140mph and you're the only car Viper Blue Paint with White Wheels you don't have much room to bargain.

Walks to my door...
Officer: What radar detector are you using.
Myself: ValentineOne. (pats V1)
Officer: Never heard of it.
Officer: You and I both know you were going well over 100 when you slammed on the brakes.
Myself: I was only trying to get to my girlfriend's graduation on time are you sure I was going THAT fast?
Officer: When I turned radar I wasn't watching it but I thought I saw 138 for a split second then it fell to 118 - 87 - 74.
Myself: Probably a glitch.
Officer: (Laughs) Returns with a ticket for 99MPH

There was some in between conversation but he basically complimented me on the detector. We were travelling at eachother and easily 15 seconds passed from when my detector went on to when I could even see him. Do the math he was using instant-on and the V1 went off with full strength THAT far apart.

Good thread. Thanks.
You can only buy it at valentineone.com $429.00 shipped. Enjoy I bought mine the day I got my driver's license. Best money ever spent.

Oh, and two friends that had Passport 8500's bought the V1 after a trip to LA with me.
