i have a decent fosgate 10" 200w RMS 8 ohm sub lying around and I dont really want to buy a new one. i am building my system up and i would like to incorporate this sub into the system. i have two rainbow component speakers that are capable of handling 100w RMS so i would like to run about 85w RMS to each of those and bridge the other two channels to run the subwoofer. 4 ohms would be better to run the components right?? how would i go about wiring the sub up without blowing the amp or anything?? would this be too much of a hassle to even mess with this?? thanks for all your help.

 

we need to know the specs from your amp.
1.# of channels?
2. Is your amp stable @ 2,4,or 8 ohms?
3. power output at what ohms, per channel?

dropping a different resistance doesn't make your speaker run better, it just supplies them with more power. If your amp is delievering 85watts rms on an 8ohm load to your components, then reconfiguring your components to a 4ohm load is useless. Theoretically, by reconfiguring your components to a 4ohm load you are forcing the amp to see a 4ohm load which makes it double the output power (85watts X 2 = 170watts rms). If your components can't handle 170watts rms, they'll blow.
Unless you sub has a Dual Voice Coil your stuck with an 8ohm load. Your amp will only deliver the sub whatever power ouput the amp is designed to put out @ an 8ohm load.

 

i was looking into getting the phoenix gold octane-r 8.0:4 amp. it doesnt say anything about 8 ohms on the website or anywhere else. should i just buy a new sub so i dont have this hassle??

the pg amp will run that sub just fine. You dont need to buy another sub.
