Thanks, I'll check it out, am looking for install this month or next, hard to choose. Biggest issue is I live in a rural area, so can't count on other cars, and line-of-sight is short, add in small town police w/Ka, losing formula for more than 5-over if they're in a ticketing mood. Having a visble detector doesn't help any.

I am surprised that no one has commented on the **** poor design by Nissan that forces you to plug in the detector with a cord going from the rear console to the front windshield. Yes, you can wire it into the mirror, but Nissan should have located the plug in on the dash.

Did you not see the small round cover on the dash between the instrument cluster and the windshield that says "Radar Detector Plug"?

j/k

Actually it probably wasn't mentioned because the issue has been beaten to death (pretty much everyone agrees it's a stupid design). It's like the orange peel in the paint, the "clunk" in the driver's seat, the water under the door after washing, etc. Eventually most people get a radar detector ("hard-wire" it or get an extension cord), drive the car really fast and forget about the minor flaws.

Nope. Actually the opposite. I only have got 2 tickets, and both of them were given by motorcycle cops that used laser. K40 did pay for them, though.

You really can't have any protection for laser. Once they shoot the laser, they know what your speed is. There is no way to detect the laser when it is not in use (except if you visually see the cop hiding in the bushes, of course.)

Still need to have somethign to detect it though... Otherwise the oppertunities to detect it and save yourself will be lost.. It has happened to me a couple of times with my V1, is also helps to know how fast u were going when clocked so a cop can't claim a faster speed then u were going if u do get stoped.

There are laser shifters out there, I have heard Escort's works well and I will probably get it. and not laws against it yet!

This is true. Had a situation like that once. Didn't get a ticket then, just went to jail. That wasn't fun. However, I knew my damn speed. 38 in a 40, got pulled over for "suspicious behavior". Damn panama city during spring break.

Escort has come out with a cordless detector that I plan on purchasing due to the poor design of the Z with no plug in. I have owned Escort's in the past and they work great.

as quoted on Valentine 1's website:

"A word to Passport 8500 owners: If your purchase is less than 30 days old, you can send back your weak performer for a full refund. "

ROTFL that has got to be the funniest thing I've read all day. GO V1!

Pretty much what I thought - my BEL 870 picked up the laser just fine, but no way protected me against getting busted if I was going faster.

Still, I can see the value of *detection* of laser, just like my example, I damn well know that's a great spot for a copy to sit with a laser and no patrol car visible - half of avoiding tickets is simply knowing where they threat comes from.

I'll look more at the K40. It's that damn close range "surprise!" Ka-band that will get me again eventually where I live - low traffic, too many short range ambush points on curvy roads.

Thanks,
Steve

Matvol: Beware the cordless detectors. They are not as reliable as the corded ones. Batteries drain and you get inconsistant detection. Better than nothing but not ideal if you like to speed.

I seem to remember this being offered before, but haven't had any luck turning up any additional information. I just haven't seen a mounting solution that looks unobstrusive yet with the traditional designs.
Escort SR1 [recalled by FCC--use SR7]
Check it out in my 350Z Mod link at: http://www.sportzmagazine.com/Z_Home.html

Both the SR1 [350Z] and SR7 [Audi] work great.

If you go to my Home Page, follow Bob's 350Z Mod. There are thumbnail images and click-on larger images. Bob's 350Z Mod has two pages and the Escort SR1 is highlighted on page 2 in the image of my touch screen retracted.

Here is the link:

Please let me know what you think.

UNBELIEVABLE....

Truly a work of art.

BIG PROPS. I LOVE.

Did you do it yourself? If not, cost for install/labor/box/amp rack. I currently have built my own custom amp rack in the bose sub location (where your crossover is), and I thought it looked beautiful (till I saw this) and 3 10s in the same location as yours. Got the plexi going on in mine, but yours leaves me breathless.........

DJ,

I took my mod to the max for a number of reasons. First and foremost is the pleasure of the setup; the sound quality is amazing and the dual subwoofers can move a lot of air. The GPS/DVD/CD/TV/DVD/Sat Radio system took a while to learn, but it's an unbelievable experience every time I get in my Z. Imagine this, my house is in a rural area of Colorado and the closest stores are 20 minutes away and dispite the closeness of their locations, I always do the GPS thing. Is that sick or what?

Secondly, as the owner/publisher of Sport Z Magazine, the install was intended to be a marketing tool which allowed me to write it off on this years tax returns. It's likely that I'll also be able to write off the cost of my Z as well.

As far as the work involved, I did not do the labor myself. If you scroll down the Sport Z Home Page, you'll see an ad for CarToys in the SE Denver area. I have some friends who play for the Denver Broncos and they all use CarToys in Littleton, Colorado for their systems, so I was safe going in. Knowing their skills going into the project, I was comfortable they could make my design work. They did a terrific job. I'm a former design engineer and can be a bit fastidious [****] when it come to this kind of stuff. [I drive the associate publisher and editor nuts sometimes, but that's another story]

I try not to talk of the dollars it took to put it all together, but if you look at the parts list of the components I selected and go to their web sites, you can get a good idea of the component costs. If you take that number and double it, I think you'll be close to the amount I spent.

There was a recent post on the "subs, subs and more subs" link in my350Z.com that inferred my design to be too flashy [neon] and that's OK. Heck, as hard as it is to believe, not everybody liked Elvis either.

In closing, I'm glad you understand the fun element of my mod and if you ever get to Colorado, we'll take it and scare some wildlife.

Yeah. I did installs at Circuit City for a little over a year, so I was constantly around stereos. This setup is so sweet.

To those who bash: Regardless if it is too loud for you, if it is "too ricey" for you, regardless of whatever; you have to appreciate the quality of workmanship that goes into a setup like this.

Don't worry about their opinions. What works for you, well, works for you (and people like me).

Actually if people talk enough trash to you and you get to the point you wanna trash it, I'll take it off your hands.

Damn flashy crap...

Hey, maybe if you start a **** magazine you can get trips to sammys as a write off. If so, I'll go in with ya on startup capital. Hmmm........

Probably can't sell my sole to the devil, but I may find a way to keep all my options open.

Good night and may the good news be yours.

Definitely Valentine One. I've owned the Passports and the V1 is clearly superior- one thing, though--- you have to mount it mid-windshield for it to have a clear shot out the (small) back window.

RE: Power outlet- try a 4 outlet extension that you can plug in and then bury under the passenger seat. Gives you additional outlets for cell phone, etc. as well.

I have this one and love it:

http://www.auto-radar-detectors.com/whisremlasde.html

I've had it in two cars now. Its very small and has good features and gives me ample response time. Also comes with rear laser detector.
