Do a search on Valentine One (or V-1) or on Passport 8500. You'll find TONS of threads about radar detectors.

I have a V-1 and have NEVER received a ticket (radar or laser) since I got it (9 years ago).

K-40. Love it. Kept me out of many tickets in the mustang, only 2 so far in the Z (had the car for 3 weeks, though ). Hell, it will pay for any speeding ticket for the first year.

Does anyone know if there is a possible way, or if any designer, has a radar detector that actually mounts the detection hardware outside of the car in the grill or a similar location and routes the signal to a display inside?

I seem to remember this being offered before, but haven't had any luck turning up any additional information. I just haven't seen a mounting solution that looks unobstrusive yet with the traditional designs.

I believe that passport has a model like that, with the hardware in the grill and on the rear around the license plate or something.

Use Bel, but warning is too late, also many false positives.

Tried out friends Passport 8500, much, much better!

Line of sight to rear is an issue, too, unless you mount high relative to the dash.

I'm looking into integrated systems now. Even the Bel has saved me the piddly country road "47 in a 35mph zone" kind of tickets.

Too easy to exceed "10-over" in the Z w/o even noticing it, that's the kind of ticket I can't stand, and most traps are really obvious for these situations. Just don't crank the stereo if you depend on the audible alarm!

Anyone have experience with remote radars?

Do you still have to have a unit on the windows?
Do the remote units just pick up laser or does it pick up other bands as well?

How much for 2 tickets, all things considered? $600-1000 gets you into remote market, and in VA the use of X,K band still outweighs Ka use (cost issue) because they've outlawed the detectors. X & K are far easier to detect, big time.

Not advocating criminal activity (disclaimer) but not only are remotes with anti-radar-detector-detector (mouthful) hidden, they're not constrained on power as much as dash mounts.

Bonus is longer detection range, and enough power to start playing around with laser "shifters" (aka laser deflector, jammers). Dash mounts are useless for laser, except to tell you that you're busted.

I've only seen laser once in use, and trolling along at 65 in traffic, cop on the underpass nailed my car and scared the crap out of me for no reason other than I'd never heard the BEL laser alarm! Had I been a non-law-abiding citizen, I'd been busted big time.

Forget the rear detector crap - so much interference Ka is useless on the rear. I'd worry more about being clocked from the rear.

I guess it all depends on how agressively they ticket - if you start packing up tickets for 5-10 over, I'd spend the money, since the cops aren't tolerant of much over the posted. If you're looking at triple digits, find an SCCA club and a track.

I bought my detector because I caught three warning-only tickets in a month in 3 different towns, all for 7-10mph over (32/25, 42/35, 51/45) - those are B*t numbers to be pulled over for.
Fortunately they went away after 90 days

Default Hey Amphesian

Amphesian,

Check out K40. They offer one where the sensors are mounted in your bumpers and the display is mounted in your instrument consoles (check engine, rear radar detected, check oil, etc.)

Pretty snazzy. Down here in AL, it runs about 800 installed at a reputable dealer.

Who makes the K40?

K40 is the manufacturer. Check out

www.k40.com

for more info. They also make dash mount ones, and jammer license plate frames, etc.

I personally have the regular one (non hide-away model) and it is GREAT. It will pick up a state trooper 1.5 - 2 miles away on a straight, flat interstate and it will pick up a reg cop in city roughly 1/2 miles away.

Dash mounts are useless for laser, except to tell you that you're busted
This is the ONLY type of tickets I have ever gotten (motorcycle cops, 2) and K40 paid for both of them.

The best thing: THEY RARELY go off if not a cop unless you are IN the parking lot with a really High powered door (you practically have to be under the sensor for it to go off). The filter on it is awesome for these types of situations: I live in a metropolis city (Mobile), and around the city, there are only roughly 5-7 places that it will go off driving without a cop being present, and I know these places. It also has VG2 (turns itself off if vg2 is present; radar not illegal here, though), so if VG2 protection is in fact undetectable, the indash mounted version might be the way to go in states where it is illegal.

In my opinion, it is the best. (damn, I should be a k40 rep). The dash mount runs roughly 249 (the cost of 2 tickets here, so i paid mine off), and for the money, it is the best I know of.

I researched remote radar detectors quite a bit and posted quite a few links, radartests, etc in this post: Remote Mounted Radar Detectors?. It was done before the last test was done (posted above by SteveZ), but should provide some information to help make a decision.

Do you mean the K40 saved you from Cop w/Laser? Laser not used much here off hways, but plenty of Ka w/hold 'tis enough.
