Default Finally! A 350z Install featuring 6.5" subs :)

Just got done with this simple little install..finally able to get some 6.5" subs into the Z...

car is a 2006 350z...

goal:

1. sound quality in a budget

2. space saving install so the entire sub box sits under the strut, no protrusions at all, front or rear

3. clean look

A pioneer Premer 780 cd/mp3 headunit ehads up the signal chain, its just temprarily installed in there with a black plate since hte 06 Z dash kit is still about 3 weeks away from being released.

the front stage is a hybrid. the customer provided with an old pair of MB Qart Q series 6.5" midbass, while i added a set of DLS UP1S tweeters. THey are both installed in a suede trimed kick panels upfront

powering the entire system is an autotek street machine 5 channel amplifier provided by the customer. it sits hidden away in the stock bose subwoofer locatoin behind the driver seat

and of course the main attraction is the trunk. 3 EU700 subs sit in a sealed enclosure under the strut bar, with a metal brace provide security against bashing.

the obvious advantage of the EU700 is that the subbox can be made extremly low profile, and the box does not protrude beyond the arch in either direction. on the back end, a covering plate with a raised 350Z logo is used.

overall, it sounds really good, the amp is active on the front components, making it very lively with lots of head room. and the EU700s, while providing formidable bass (mirror shaking, hair rasing at high volumes), really shines with techno music (the customers main listening range), being very fast and transparent

anyone who still doubt the output of these subs...i will let the owner chime in, or if anyone is in norcal, they can hear these for themselves

the towel bar as a brace is not my idea, its not new either, i htink i frst saw installers use it about 10 years ago...the truth is, there just isnt an easier way to do it, not a lot of people have the knowledge to bend metal into shape, and most installs dont have the budget...so i usually take a bar, modifiy it (remove the big round base etc)...and make it fit its practical and in most cases, look pretty clean hehe

i'll chime in too
my initial impression

1: VERY clean install
2: clean balanced sound(which was more important to me than pure bass)
3: kept me well within my budget
4: stealth factor was maintained

i post after i've listened and lived with the system a bit

I'm not digging the towel rack in the back. Possibly if it was painted tactical black or something. But the budget is the budget.

Errr maybe I just don't get it, but how is the "stealth factor maintained" when someone can peer in and see three 6.5" subs? I took out my spare and put 2 10" Image Dynamics woofers pointed up -- now that's stealth! Just hope I don't ever need the spare tire, lol.

acutally, you would really have to be humping the back hatch and window to really see the subs, they are set far back into the arch and its pretty impossible to seat and also, there are no tell tale signs of a box protruding from infront of hte arch behind the seat

it is pretty difficult to the see the sub/box actually
you have to be pretty tall and lean over the hatch and see em'

the bar was a total spur of the moment deal to protect the subs and
i figured it will come in really handy when i'm washing the car to hang the towels
i'll paint it black when i have some free time

originally I was a bit concerned about losing the dead pedal. but after driving around a bit it really does not bother me.
kinda got used to resting my foot in a different way.

having the Mb quart 6.5" in a kick enclosure really kicked up the mid bass far beyond my expectations.

also I'm really glad I went with bing's recommendation on dls up1s tweeters. they sound a lot more natural than the q series tweeters.

I was a bit skeptical on the 6.5" woofers until I heard them on an install bing did on a 4 runner. they go surprisingly deep and get pretty loud.

we also used the module to keep the stock steering wheel controls with the pioneer deck(they work perfectly)

so overall I'm satisfied with the install.

I'll recommend bing to anyone looking for a super clean install

Only 2 things that get me is
1) the componets up front looked liek they are fireing in a weird direction
2) could u maybe lose the towel bar and do soemthing else? (was thinking of something like a peice of plexiblass with leds installed into the ends to give the bar a glow)

quick response:

1. i have built prolly a dozen of these kicks, facing exactly the same way, for people, and you can ask anyone who has them, if they sound weird at all, if htey sound like they are low and coming from your feet

2. its easy to imagine a way to do it, but honestly, with my resources, and the budgeting, bending a piece of plexi tube is pretty much out of the question, not to mention brittle For metal protection, there really isnt much choice, i have used cooper tubing bent with joints and elbows, but honestly, the contraction looks less clean and appealing

the imaging is solid........ right in front above the steering wheel
also the pioneer has time alighnment feature which i've been messing around with. even without that feature i'm happy with the imaging

Thats cold man, let the guy enjoy his install.
If I may suggest, maybe bars for each individual sub, three for each or three bars across all the subs, top, middle, and bottom. You could poke around sounddomain for some ideas, plenty of pics there for inspiration.

Not a fan of the shower bar, but given it's purpose ... its all good.

what is the mounting depth of the 6.5" subs?
