Default TomTom GPS?

my car didnt come with nav and i found TomTom to have good reviews and an affordable price. I wanted to know if i could mount it inside the empty cubby hole or does it have to be on the windshield to have a clear view of the road? Anyone have a TomTom installed? Pics? I was looking at TomTom Go 910

If you want a no hassle Navi system, go Garmin. I got the Garmin C330 and it works like charm when its needed. You can go the suction mouth way or Cupy holder as well. Some Pictures:

The Garmin Quest/Quest2 are really nice. Not only is it great for in-car use, but with it's small size and flip-up antenna it will fit in your pocket. While on the battery you can get about 17hrs of use. So if you are into geocaching it's great for that too.

my main concern is if it needs to be mounted on the winshield for a clear view of the road or if it can be used while in the cubby hole. i want to hard wire it

I think you can hardwire the Quest2. It doesn't require an additional antenna, but you can hook an external one up for more sensitivity. I've never had a reception problem with the standard antenna so I never bought one. Also I'd get the Quest2 over the Quest since the entire N.America map is included, it's slightly faster and it has more internal memory for custom maps. The Quest can only load a certain number of metro areas, unless I'm mistaken.

Yes you can mount an external antenna inside like on your strut bar. Ithink the external antenna has 2 meters of wire with it.

If you can get a TomTom 910 for $220, I'd say buy two and sell the other. I'm pretty sure they retail for at least $650. The Quest2 and TomTom700 (my brother has) can be had for about $525 or so.
