Good point about height not fitting.
VGA screens (I believe) are of the 4:3 ratio of width to height.
7" screen measured diagonally would have dimensions of 5.60" x 4.20".
6.4" screen measured diagonally would have dimensions of 5.12" x 3.84".
Don't remember the height of the Nav hole...think it was between 3.6" and 3.7"
Hmmm. There are practical uses for the Pythagoras' Theorem and algebra...
What do you know...my 9th grade math teacher was right.

Well I just got the Xenarc screen (have to return it cause it has 2 dead pixels )
But here are the screen dimensions
6.1"x3.62"
Gonna have to wait for new screen to come before I can open it and put it in the dash. the housing is about 1/2" all around and bout 0.39" on top. Might have to cut some of the back of the dash to fit, just hope that without the case it will fit with no mods Its roughly the same size as the farenheit one, bout .2 wider and .1-.2 higher.
Oh VGA is soooooooo clear on it. Plus the touchscreen is just sooo cool. Can't wait to put this in.

Definetly keep us posted....I have just about all the stuff I need to build my auto pc, but still hadn't decided on the screen. I'd really like to use VGA, but my biggest hang up has been getting that Xenarc to fit. By the way, where did you buy it from? How much?
Thanks and good luck!

VGA SCREEN UPDATE!!!!!
I spoke with the supplier of the screen today. Here is the current status.
The supplier has recieved the first sample unit, but this unit has been sent to Korea for the designing of additional backlights. Another sample unit should be available for me to see/borrow within 3 weeks. Actual units should be available for purchase in approx (6) weeks.
As for pricing, I was given estimated prices today, and I am pleasantly surprised.
The screen, including the inverter, and a VGA controller, and at standard factory brightness of 250NITS is going to cost approx. $350.00, and most likely lower!!!
Additional backlighting may not be available initially, but can be added later (not sure if it can be added by us, or if it needs to be done in a 'clean room'), but my guess is that the cost to increase the unit to 400 NITS will only be $100 or less!!
Waiting this long is going to be tough, especially for those of us who have already purchased other components. But, I think it is going to be worth the wait.

update:
LG Phillips has delayed the release of the new 6.4" screen by another 2 months.
In the meantime, I was able to get my hands on a working unit of their previous version. I am going to try and see if I can make this one fit easily and cleanly in the opening we have.
I paid $400 for this unit, including tax. It isn't a touch screen yet, but I plan on looking into adding one to it. The controller does have a VGA input, an S-Video input, and a composite video input. The screen also has additional backlighting, increasing the nits rating to 500.
Here are some comparison pictures of the 6.4"screen, and my Dell Inspiron 8000.
The first picture is with a flash on the camera.

In the above picture, you can see that the small screen is brighter, but in the picture below, you can really tell. All I did differently when I took this second picture was to turn off the flash, and also force my digital cam to not overexpose due to the low light.

Yeh, good question. I've been in cheap mode for awhile and I have to admit, as nice as this would be it's not on the top ofthe list... But,... what's up Scaf? Any news?

Sorry all for not posting any updates.
Here's what has happened since my last post.
When I was told of the delay on the LG Phillips screen I wanted, I bought the demo unit as I posted above. Even though I had already tested the fitment of this unit, and found it to be, well, not perfect, I was just so anxious that I bought the demo.
During installation I realized that I was not going to be happy with this particular screen, solely based on the modifications that were going to be required to the nav area to have it fit decently. At the same time, others were installing the Xenarc, and commenting about how well it fit. About this same time I found a good deal on the Xenarc, bought it, and that is what I am using.
There were (2) main reasons why I was trying to find an alternate to the Xenarc. One was price, and unless the cost of the LG Phillips unit has dropped, price is no longer a disparity. The other was brightness. In a car application,I still think you want the brightest possible screen for daytime use, as long as you have the ability to easily dim it at night. But I'm not sure that even the brightest screen is going to be able to counteract the glare we are going to get.
I'm not real happy with the brightness of the Xenarc during the day. This becomes real apparant when I am showing off my car pc to friends, and am forced to hold my hand up to shade the screen just so they can actually see what is displayed. In the evening however, the screen lights up the cab.
So basically, I am satisfied for the moment with the Xenarc I have. But since this thread has been reactivated, I will do some research on the LG Phillips unit, and see if it was produced and available. They were actually working on a widescreen version at the time, but production was quite a ways off. Maybe this unit is close to being available now.
I'll check, and advise. If you don't hear from me, post here, and that will prompt me.
