Default pioneer avic z1 vs d2

im in the market for a new headunit, primarily for the navigation functions; oboivusly the z1 is newer and has a lot of upgraded functions, but what i really would like to have is the ability to change/alter/set destinations while driving (not DRIVING but ie in traffic or at a stop light etc etc); the ability to play movies is not relly important but woudl def be very cool feature to have

the sound qualities are a moot as i will not be upgrading that department at all (i have the non-bose stereo) price is definitely important but if its worth it im willing to pay xtra if its warranted

1. navigation
2. fitment
3. price
4. ease of use

PS if anyone has had any good experiences with installers in NYC any recommendations would be great...i just moved here thus the need for navi;
i have found the D2 for 1250 from crutchfiled including a handheld gps unit (or 979 from etronics) the cheapest i found the Z1 is 1689

ANY and ALL input is appreciated (and yes i searched...read about 15 pages of threads)

Default Got the Z1 from thecameraspros

Hey., I Got the Z1 and I really love it, I installed the ducatyboy bypass (From avic411.com) work perfect. It run for $30.

I installed it myself, and I have full funtionality while driving. I also installed the XM with Navtraffic and I get updates of the Traffic conditions in my area. (I live in grand miami, FL and we are the 3er batest traffic city in USA so belive me is really usefull for me). I hear that if you are not in a metro area the navtraffic is not that great. It work incredible well for me.

The interface for the Z1 is great (I personally don't like the Ipod one, it doesn't let you go back in the menu so if you have a lot of tunes you have to go page by page to play the on in the bottoms..it could be better).

good luck

The Z-1 is definately worth the extra dough for the HDD alone. The Z-1 from camerpros is a refurb, another member called them and confirmed it. but hey if it works who cares if its a refurb, just read the warranty details.

I read that in some post, I guess i got lucky or they go rid of the brend new first but mine was 100% brand new, it was sealed, it had all pioneer seals and I even call pionneer with my serial number and all was ok. anyway it is a $1400+ unit so for a couple of $100s more if you are sure that is brand new go for it. The unit is really good and it really worth it.

i have been doign some reading, and it seems as tho pioneer has made it pretty much impossible to access teh navi system while driving now? is thsi true? (i am also hesitant to do anything that will void the warranty, such as the ducati bypass etc etc)

Bypassing it can probably be done. But it is a bit harder because they see the vehilce in motion by using the GPS sensors. They also have gyroscopes it. I would talk to one of the sponsors on here like 16psiBrick

You can still do voice cammand while in motion to enter in new destinations into the Nav. It really is distracting punching in adress's one digit at a time.

The lockout can be bypassed by turning the lights on then off three times as the unit boots (Z1). The bypass your refering to probably delivers three positive pulses to the illumination lead to simulate that procedure without flashing the lights.

when you guys installed either of these units, did it require any additional labor to make it flush? i want to look as oem as possible and will probably take it to circuit city or best buy for the install; its easy enough that they wont f*ck it up right? i plan to buy it online using froogal or bizrate etc etc...what exactly do i need for the install? links would be great! (ie harnesses or metra kits?) im prettty much noob to the car stereo scene except for whatever ive read from this forum...and i dont have the time to go to other forums and read about the ins and outs basically; a crash course is what teh doc ordered...

Got my Z1 from 6ave.com for $1500. They are an authorized Pioneer dealer, although it's not clear if they are only authorized for Pioneer home products rather than car products. It's a really nice unit.

NOTE: THE DUCATYBOY BYPASS - DO NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY-

This bypass is not a MOD to the unit, Is a small circuit that Simulate the 3 light flashing when the unit is booting so it bypass the securety feature. This was a Firmware bug (that it seen to be fix in most recent units) however if you check avic411.com you can find all the information.

Again this Unit does not void any warranty because it have nothing to do with the unit itself. no hardware mod whatsoever.

it works great!

Here is a pic of my Z1 PIC

I installed myself using the metra kit and bypassed using the ducatyboy circuit.
