Default Door Speaker Upgrades

Quick question for anyone who's chosen to upgrade their stock radio/speaker set up. I'm searching online for different components to replace the stock OEM head unit and speakers, and Crutchfield lists two choices for the
5 1/4 door speakers: Boston Acoustics Pro 50 $600 and Polk SR5250 $750.

I'm by no means cheap, but regular door speakers for this amount seems a bit much. Just wondering if anyone else has replaced their stock equipment and what you paid for speakers and head units.

thanks

Last time I checked woofers.etc had 280 different speaker pairs that fit the 6.5" front door cutouts for less than $250 a pair. Depending on wether you want componets or not your budget will vary but you do not have to spend anywhere near the kind of money you were talking about for a good set of speakers.

Thanks alot. I planned on getting everything from Crutchfield and then having it professionally installed. I searched using the "what fits my car" function and couldn't believe only two options were available. Are they 6.5 or 5 1/4 speakers for the front doors?

thanks again!

5 1/4 speakers for the front doors...

I changed my speakers recently... i spent about $380 for some volks in the back and blaupunkts in the front...
The reason i did not go with polk all over is cause they did not fit on the car even if the "fit in the car" function said so..
Best way to do it , is call them instead of just ordering from the web... turns out that the window in the front leaves a small space, and if the speaker manget is on the way window wont be able to close, or break or crack... you gotta be careful. I know there is a "spacer" thing you can put so the speaker comes more away from the door but there is a limit to that.. The guy on the phone had pics of installation and told me what to get..

I used 6.5" all around....If you want some Boston Pros, I have a pair of LF6.4 Boston Pros...paid over $500 for the pair. You can have em for $100. Comes with 6.5" woofers, tweeters, and crossovers.

If you are going to have it professionally installed, do you mean by a shop? If so, do the shop and yourself a favor and buy the speakers from the shop. Crutchfrield is not cheap! But they are very helpful for someone who's going to DIY the job.

My opinion...

I would've gone with the install guys until we began talking about head units and nav systems. He quoted a ball park figure of about $2,000 for a touch-screen nav system and I told him I could get one cheaper from Crutchfield.
I don't mind paying extra for a quality installation, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay mark up prices for parts especially when the shop gets the stuff at reduced prices
